Active tracking lets a drone follow a selected moving subject using its vision system; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted lock or make the aircraft an autonomous surveillance tool. DJI’s ActiveTrack developer documentation describes selecting and confirming a target, then having the aircraft fly relative to it without a GPS tracker on the subject. Tracking can fail, safety rules still apply, and recording people raises privacy concerns.
What active tracking does
In DJI’s documented ActiveTrack workflow, the aircraft initially hovers while its vision system tracks a moving subject. The operator selects the target with a rectangle and confirms that the selection is correct. After confirmation, the aircraft can move relative to that target. The subject does not need to carry a GPS tracker; tracking is based on the aircraft’s vision system. DJI’s ActiveTrack developer documentation describes this behavior, but it is not a survey of every drone or current model.
Tracking modes can behave differently. DJI’s documentation describes Spotlight as keeping the aircraft hovering while the camera continues to follow the subject using gimbal pitch and aircraft yaw. That is distinct from having the aircraft travel relative to the target.
Why a tracking drone can lose its target
Subject tracking depends on the aircraft retaining sufficient confidence in what it is following. DJI says that when confidence becomes insufficient, the aircraft stops flying relative to the object and either notifies the operator that the target is lost or requests confirmation. The operator should be ready to take control rather than assume the drone will keep following safely.

Obstacle sensing also depends on the model and flight mode. DJI’s developer reference specifically names the Mavic Air 2 and Air 2S: it says obstacle sensing is disabled in Sport mode and advises using ActiveTrack in an open area in that mode. It also warns that those models lack left- and right-side obstacle avoidance during Circle mode. These are model-specific notes in developer documentation, not assurances about every drone or every present-day configuration.
What to check before choosing a drone with subject tracking
A tracking label alone does not establish how useful or safe a drone will be for a particular flight. Verify the specifications and operating behavior for the exact model, software and mode you intend to use.

- Tracking behavior: Check how the aircraft follows the selected subject, what modes are available, and what it does when tracking confidence drops.
- Obstacle sensing: Confirm which directions are sensed and whether sensing changes by flight mode.
- Camera and endurance: Compare the camera capability and flight endurance against the filming task, using current manufacturer specifications.
- Privacy controls: Review what data the aircraft and flight app collect, how it is retained, and what controls are available.
- Availability and rules: Verify current model availability and the rules that apply where and how you plan to fly.
The available documentation supports the Air 2S as a named ActiveTrack example, but does not establish its current availability, firmware compatibility, price, or suitability against other currently sold models. It is not enough to make a current market-wide ranking.

In the United States, a drone that follows a subject remains subject to the rules for the operation. The FAA’s Part 107 overview, dated July 6, 2026, covers small unmanned aircraft weighing under 55 pounds used in commercial and government contexts. It says operators generally must keep the aircraft within visual line of sight, avoid flying over people unless they are directly participating, and observe an ordinary maximum altitude of 400 feet above ground and a maximum speed of 100 mph. Part 107 operators must register each drone. Controlled airspace requires authorization; some restrictions may be waived with FAA approval and a safety showing.

For recreational flights, the FAA distinguishes personal enjoyment from non-recreational purposes; payment alone does not settle the question. Its recreational flyer guidance calls for visual line of sight or a co-located visual observer, completion of TRUST, controlled-airspace authorization where required, and compliance with applicable registration and Remote ID requirements. The FAA advises assuming Part 107 applies when the purpose is uncertain.
The FAA’s Remote ID guidance, last updated March 19, 2025, describes three compliance routes: a Standard Remote ID drone, an attached broadcast module, or flight in a recognized FRIA under the stated conditions. The page says registered or registration-required drones flown recreationally, for business, or for public safety must comply. Check the specific aircraft or module in the FAA Declaration of Compliance System and confirm current requirements for the operation and location. These are U.S.-specific rules, not a summary of requirements elsewhere.

Consider privacy before recording people
Following someone with a camera can reveal more than a brief image. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s privacy guidance explains that combining images with precise location and time can make it easier to trace people’s whereabouts and activities. It recommends privacy by design, data minimization, and attention to retention and security. Applicable obligations depend on the operator’s role and local law; EU guidance should not be treated as a universal legal rule.
DJI’s security and privacy white paper page describes manufacturer-stated controls, including Local Data Mode, which DJI says disconnects the flight application from the internet entirely. That vendor description is not an independent audit of every data flow and does not establish that the control is available on every model.

Use tracking as an aid, not a guarantee
Active tracking can help frame a moving subject, but target selection, loss of tracking confidence, obstacle-sensing limits, applicable flight rules, and privacy all remain the operator’s responsibility. Confirm the selected target, understand the exact model’s mode-specific limits, maintain the required visual oversight, and be prepared to take control.
