There is no single function key that turns off every laptop touchpad. Look for a touchpad-shaped icon on your keyboard and check the guide for your exact laptop model. Depending on the device, the key may work by itself or only when pressed with Fn. If the shortcut is missing or does not work, Windows 11 may offer a touchpad toggle in Settings.
How to find the touchpad-off key
Inspect the top row and other keys for an icon that looks like a touchpad, often a small rectangle with a line or symbol through it. The icon identifies a hotkey function, but its position and required key combination vary by model. Use the manual for the laptop’s exact model rather than assuming a shortcut applies to every device from the same manufacturer.
For example, Lenovo’s V140-15IWL guide shows a touchpad icon on F6 (Lenovo V140-15IWL hotkey guide). Other documented examples include Fn+M on the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7a (15″, 11) and Fn+F3 on some MSI notebooks; some MSI Summit and Prestige models use Fn+F4 instead (Lenovo Yoga Pro 7a guide; MSI notebook keyboard guidance). These are model-specific examples, not a universal key map.

Should you press Fn?
Try the touchpad key by itself first, then try it with Fn if it does not respond. Which version works can depend on the laptop’s hotkey mode. Lenovo documents hotkey mode as a UEFI BIOS setting; in the referenced E41-50 guide, enabled mode requires Fn with the hotkey, while disabled mode lets the hotkey work directly (Lenovo hotkey mode guidance).

Windows 11: turn off the touchpad in Settings
If the keyboard shortcut is unavailable or ineffective, the Lenovo Windows 11 guide gives this route: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. Turn off the Touchpad toggle on that page (Lenovo Yoga Pro 7a guide). Menu labels and available options can vary by Windows release and device.

If the shortcut does not work
- Confirm the key for your model. Find the touchpad icon and check the laptop’s model-specific guide; manufacturers can change shortcuts between models and generations.
- Try both key combinations. Press the icon key alone, then with Fn. If the manual documents a hotkey-mode setting, check whether it changes how the top-row keys behave.
- Use the Windows touchpad control. On the cited Windows 11 route, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and switch off Touchpad.
- Check the manufacturer’s hotkey software and touchpad driver. LG says its HotKeyManager can be disabled and recommends enabling it; its guidance also includes reinstalling the touchpad driver. MSI advises using system settings if its shortcut does not toggle the pad (LG troubleshooting guidance; MSI guidance).
If you only want to avoid accidental movement while typing
Turning the touchpad off with its shortcut is one option; adjusting touchpad sensitivity is another. LG lists both approaches for reducing unwanted movement while typing (LG gram guidance). An external mouse is optional: LG also documents a setting for whether the touchpad remains enabled when a mouse is connected (LG gram guidance).
