You can build an Obsidian knowledge base without composing a separate note for every source: use the official Web Clipper to save whole pages, selected passages, or structured source records directly into your vault. You still need to choose what to keep and review it later; clipping removes much of the transcription, not the thinking.
Choose what you want to capture
The official Obsidian Web Clipper is a free browser extension for highlighting web pages and saving content to an Obsidian vault. Its capture interface can use page metadata, templates, selected text, and highlights. Obsidian says saved content is stored locally as Markdown files. See the Web Clipper introduction.

1. Clip complete pages into an inbox
This is the quickest way to collect sources without writing a summary for each one. Install the official extension in a supported browser, then use its add-to-Obsidian action to save the page. By default, the clipper attempts to extract the main article content rather than simply copying the entire browser view. Templates can customize what is saved. The capture guide explains the available capture behavior.
Set up one destination
- Install the official Obsidian Web Clipper from the directory for your browser, as linked from the official introduction.
- In Obsidian, create a dedicated folder such as
Inbox/Clipsfor captured pages. - In the clipper, create or adjust a template so new captures are saved to that folder.
- Open a page worth keeping and use the extension’s add-to-Obsidian action. Check the preview or resulting note to confirm the destination and content.
An inbox keeps unprocessed captures separate from notes you have already reviewed. It also gives you a simple place to start: capture first, then decide which pages deserve attention. A clip by itself is not evidence that you understand or have synthesized its ideas.

2. Save only highlights or selected passages
If you already know which parts of a page are useful, capture those instead of the whole article. Select text or use the clipper’s highlighter, then clip the page. Obsidian’s capture guide says a text selection or highlights override the default page-extraction behavior. That makes this approach a better fit for focused quotations, definitions, or passages you intend to revisit than for preserving a complete source.
Keep enough context to find the source
A short excerpt can be easier to scan than a full article, but it can also lose surrounding context. Keep the source information or page link with the passage, and capture only excerpts that will be meaningful when you encounter them later. The clipper supports page properties and templates, so you can retain source details without manually composing a full note.

3. Turn captures into structured source records
When you collect material for a project or subject area, consistent fields can make it easier to find and compare sources later. The clipper supports templates and extracted page metadata; Obsidian describes templates for articles, recipes, references, and academic papers. You can shape a saved page around fields such as title, author, date, source, category, and tags, then include the captured content beneath them.

Add only fields that help with retrieval
Start with a few fields you will actually use. For example, author and publication date can help distinguish sources, while a category or tag can group material by topic. A larger template is not automatically better: fields that you do not fill or search by add friction without improving retrieval. Use the clipper’s template settings to set the destination and format, and verify a test capture before relying on it for a larger collection.

What clipping does—and does not—preserve
Obsidian’s November 11, 2024 announcement, “Save the web,” describes captured material as durable Markdown that can be read offline and preserved over time. That is useful for keeping a local text record in your vault, but it does not guarantee that every part of the original web page is preserved.
- Images: The clipper does not download images automatically. A saved page may refer to images at their original web addresses, which may not work offline or if the remote address stops working.
- Understanding: Capturing a page or excerpt does not itself create an explanation, connection, or synthesis. Review the inbox and add your own interpretation when you have something useful to say.
- Devices: Sync is listed by Obsidian as an add-on service for synchronizing notes across devices; the help pages do not describe it as a requirement for clipping. See the Obsidian Help index.
A practical starting workflow
- Make one folder for new clips.
- Use the whole-page workflow when you need the complete article; choose selection or highlights when only specific passages matter.
- Add a small set of template fields only if they support later sorting or comparison.
- Periodically review the inbox: keep useful sources, connect them to relevant notes, and discard captures that no longer serve a purpose.
This approach cuts down on manual note composition while keeping the choices that make a knowledge base useful: what to save, how to label it, and what deserves a second look.
