A phone can erase itself in response to a security trigger, but the trigger matters. Samsung’s documented lockout policy responds to repeated incorrect entries; GrapheneOS’s duress credential is a password or PIN you deliberately enter to wipe the device. They are different features, and neither explains GrapheneOS’s device policy on its own: the project says hardware and firmware requirements determine which phones it can support securely.

The Galaxy Note model and software version behind this experience are unspecified, so its exact setting and trigger cannot be confirmed. Samsung’s current One UI 9 guidance is useful for understanding Samsung’s present policy, but it should not be treated as proof of how an older Note behaves.

Does Samsung erase your phone after too many wrong passwords?

Samsung’s current US support guidance for One UI 9 says that repeated failed lock-screen attempts bring increasing delays, and that after the 13th failed attempt the device is permanently locked and must be factory reset to be used again. Samsung notes that features and settings vary by model and software version, so this policy does not establish the threshold or behavior on an unspecified Galaxy Note. Samsung’s One UI 9 lock-screen guidance does not provide a universal menu path for every Note.

A factory reset is not password recovery. Samsung says it cannot remotely view, retrieve, or recover a local lock-screen PIN, pattern, or password. After a reset, the Google and Samsung accounts previously registered on the device may be required to clear Factory Reset Protection before it can be used again. Samsung also says Android’s Strong Authentication requires entering the backup PIN, pattern, or password at least once every 72 hours, even when biometrics are used most of the time.

What is a GrapheneOS duress password?

GrapheneOS lets a user configure a duress PIN or password and enter it intentionally wherever device credentials are requested, including the lock screen and relevant operating-system prompts. That action irreversibly wipes the device, including installed eSIMs. It is not an automatic response to a set number of mistyped passwords. GrapheneOS’s feature overview documents the behavior.

There is an important credential collision rule: if the duress credential matches the normal unlock credential, the normal unlock takes precedence and the wipe does not occur. A duress credential therefore needs to be distinct from the everyday credential. Since the wipe is irreversible, configure and use the feature only with a clear understanding of what will be erased.

How GrapheneOS handles failed attempts and a locked phone

GrapheneOS documents separate protections that can be mistaken for a duress feature. Its FAQ lists rising delays after incorrect attempts, with no further attempts allowed after attempt 20. The table gives the documented delay sequence; the FAQ page does not state a publication year.

GrapheneOS also offers a configurable auto-reboot feature. If the phone stays locked for the configured period, it reboots while still locked, putting data at rest. This is timer-based; it is neither a duress credential nor a wipe triggered by failed attempts. The GrapheneOS FAQ and feature overview describe these protections.

Why does GrapheneOS support only certain phones?

GrapheneOS says the hardware and firmware in most devices prevent it from providing a reasonably secure platform. Its FAQ sets out requirements for future devices and says the project officially supports devices with Weaver, a hardware-backed security component. The support limit is therefore about the underlying platform and the ability to maintain security—not simply a decision tied to the duress-password feature or a blanket exclusion of one manufacturer.

The project’s installation materials also describe verified boot and attestation as ways to verify supported-device hardware, firmware, and installation authenticity. In practice, a phone must be a supported model and have a bootloader that can be unlocked for the exact SKU and carrier variant. A model name alone may not be enough: some carrier variants prevent bootloader unlocking.

Can you install GrapheneOS on a Samsung Galaxy Note?

Do not assume that a Galaxy Note can run GrapheneOS. The project’s official support is limited to its supported devices, and the installation guide should be checked for the exact model before buying or attempting installation. The project recommends buying a supported device and installing GrapheneOS yourself; a supported Pixel phone is the broad hardware category to investigate, not a guarantee that every Pixel generation or carrier variant qualifies.

Installation is more consequential than installing an app. GrapheneOS’s web installer guide explains the supported-device process, including bootloader unlocking and relocking after installation. Unlocking the bootloader wipes data, so back up anything you need before beginning. Verify current support and unlockability for the specific device and SKU against the official documentation.
