There is no published, controlled head-to-head test showing that rclone mount or rclone bisync is universally faster, uses less RAM, or produces fewer conflicts with Dropbox. The available numbers are workload-specific bisync examples, not a mount-versus-bisync benchmark. The practical choice is about access: mount exposes remote files through a virtual filesystem, while bisync keeps files at two paths and propagates changes between them.

What each mode does

Mount: browse remote files through a virtual filesystem

rclone mount presents remote storage as a filesystem on the machine. You can access remote files without first keeping a complete local copy. It is suited to interactive access, but filesystem access does not mean every remote change is instantly visible or every operation completes without provider or network delay. See the rclone mount documentation.

Bisync: maintain files at both endpoints

rclone bisync compares two paths and propagates changes in both directions. Each endpoint has files; bisync is typically run manually or on a schedule. Its update delay therefore depends on when it runs, the time needed to list and compare files, backend behavior, and any transfers. See the rclone bisync guide.

What the published timing numbers actually show

The rclone bisync guide describes a local-disk-to-Dropbox example on a connection reported as about 170 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. It began with 500 synced files averaging about 9.5 MB, then added 50 more files of about 9.5 MB each—roughly 475 MB total. These are documentation-reported workflow timings, not independent measurements and not mount timings.

Example operation Guide-reported timing What it represents
List 500 unchanged, already-synced files 1.5 seconds overall No-change run; the guide also reports 1.5 seconds with --check-access.
Download 50 newly added remote files 27 seconds for queued copies; 29 seconds overall About 475 MB of downloads in the documented example.
Move the local directory 410 seconds for 50 uploads and 9 seconds for 50 remote deletes; 421 seconds overall Upload-heavy work on the example’s 10 Mbps reported upload connection.
Move the remote directory 31 seconds for 50 downloads and under one second for 50 deletes; 33 seconds overall Download-heavy work on the example’s 170 Mbps reported download connection.
Delete the local directory 9 seconds for 50 remote deletes; 13 seconds overall Deletion workflow in the same example.

The contrast between upload and download times is consistent with the example’s asymmetric connection, but it does not predict another user’s Dropbox latency or transfer rate. A separate GitHub issue reports one user’s bisync normal runs at 6 minutes 44.7 seconds with defaults and 6 minutes 31.9 seconds with checksum-related flags; that user reported subsequent sync and copy runs around 17–19 seconds. The workload and configuration were specific, and this is not a controlled comparison with mount. See the user-submitted rclone issue.

Latency and freshness are different questions

Mount response and visibility

Mount provides filesystem-style access, but the result depends on caching and remote behavior. The mount documentation gives a default --attr-timeout of one second for kernel attribute caching. Directory visibility and detection of remote changes also depend on directory caching, whether polling is supported, and the relevant configured intervals. In a maintainer’s forum explanation, writes are sent back after a file is closed and has not been accessed for the --vfs-write-back period; changes made externally can remain unseen until polling or directory-cache expiration. See the rclone forum discussion.

Bisync update delay

Bisync does not continuously mirror changes merely because it is configured. It updates when invoked or scheduled, then needs time for listings, comparisons, and any required transfers. Running it more frequently can shorten the wait for a run to start, but increases the frequency of work and does not turn the two paths into a mounted filesystem. A ten-minute schedule mentioned in the forum discussion is one user’s practice, not an rclone default or universal recommendation.

RAM: why file count and rclone version matter

The bisync guide’s large-scale example involved about 400 GB and 1.96 million files between a Windows disk and remote cloud storage. It reports that loading the prior listing, whose file size was 140 MB, took about 30 seconds and used about 1 GB of RAM; delta determination took a few seconds after the listings were loaded. The guide leaves fresh local and remote listing times and network speed unspecified, so they cannot be inferred from that example.

That 1 GB figure is not a general memory estimate for Dropbox, bisync, or mount. The rclone FAQ explains that before v1.70, directories with millions of entries had to be loaded entirely into memory as rclone objects, each roughly 0.5–1 kB. In v1.70 and later, rclone can automatically save directory entries to disk when a directory exceeds --list-cutoff, which defaults to 1,000,000; v1.70 also added --max-buffer-memory. These changes make version and directory shape relevant to any large-tree estimate. See the rclone FAQ.

The reviewed mount documentation does not provide a directly comparable numeric peak-RAM figure. For either mode, measure resident memory using the actual rclone version, directory structure, cache configuration, and concurrent workload rather than extrapolating from the bisync example.

Mount attribute-cache trade-off

The mount documentation says increasing --attr-timeout can reduce callbacks and improve efficiency, but a file whose remote length changes during the cache window may appear truncated or show trailing garbage. Setting the timeout to zero can cause memory and directory-listing problems. These are operational trade-offs, not a published RAM benchmark.

Conflicts and protection against data loss

Bisync preserves both versions by default

Bisync calls a file a conflict when it has changed on both sides since the prior run and the current versions differ. With the default --conflict-resolve none, it keeps both versions: it renames the copies with conflict suffixes and copies each to the opposite path. Other policies can choose the newer or older modification time, larger or smaller file, or a designated path. If the chosen policy cannot identify a winner, bisync falls back to the no-winner behavior. The guide provides no measured conflict rate or count for a standard workload.

Safety checks do not eliminate every race

The bisync guide says its snapshot model, introduced in rclone v1.66, substantially reduced risks from files changing during a run. A file that changes exactly while being read or written can still cause an error, as it can with rclone sync. Bisync’s default --max-delete threshold is 50%; it aborts before making changes when the number of deletions exceeds that threshold. If you change a filters file, the guide says to use --resync; otherwise, files newly excluded from listings could be mistaken for deletions.

Mount does not use bisync’s conflict workflow

Mount has no equivalent paired conflict-renaming policy. When multiple clients or processes edit the same file, caching and write-back timing can affect which version is observed or reaches the remote; concurrent edits can race. The available sources provide no numeric conflict rate for mount or a measured conflict-count comparison between modes.

Which one fits your Dropbox workflow?

Need More suitable starting point Trade-off to account for
Browse or open remote files without maintaining a complete local tree Mount Remote access still depends on network, provider response, caching, and write-back behavior.
Keep files at two locations and propagate changes both ways Bisync Files are only as fresh as the last completed run; conflict and recovery behavior need to be understood.
Work with very large directories Test either mode with the actual version and directory layout The documented 1 GB example is a particular bisync listing workload, not a universal requirement.
Several writers may edit the same file Test bisync’s conflict behavior if paired copies are required Mount has no matching conflict policy, and neither mode has a sourced numerical conflict-rate guarantee.
Need predictable local availability while offline Bisync, if the needed files have already been synchronized locally A mount exposes remote storage; it is not itself a guarantee that all files are locally available offline.

Before relying on either setup for important data, test with backed-up sample files that include concurrent edits, renames, deletions, and interrupted runs. For bisync, verify the conflict-renamed copies and recovery process; for mount, check how your applications close files and how the configured caches and write-back period behave.
