If you regularly move files between devices you own, LocalSend offers a straightforward alternative to emailing a file to yourself: it sends files and messages between nearby devices over a local network. It is free and open source, and its documented design does not require an internet connection or a third-party transfer server for local communication.
What LocalSend does—and what it does not
LocalSend is an app for sharing files and messages between nearby devices. The project describes a transfer path based on a REST API and HTTPS encryption, with communication taking place over the local network rather than through a third-party transfer server. The project documentation is available in the LocalSend README.
That makes it useful when your devices can reach one another on the same local network. It is not a general remote-access service or a backup system: if a device is away from the network, or you need files available from anywhere, email or cloud storage may better match the job. LocalSend’s design avoids an online transfer service for local communication, but that alone does not guarantee that every transfer is risk-free in every network environment.
Which devices can use it?
The project lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, as well as Fire OS as a distribution platform. The README surfaced minimum versions of Android 7.0, iOS 13.0, macOS 11, and Windows 10. Platform support and minimum requirements can change, so check the project’s current README before installing on an older device.

The project’s releases page listed v1.18.2, dated August 21, 2026, when checked. Treat that as a dated release listing rather than a guarantee that it remains the latest version.
How to move a file between nearby devices
- Install LocalSend on the devices you want to use. The project recommends downloading through an app store or package manager. Its README says the app does not auto-update, so do not assume it will install updates in the background.
- Connect both devices to a network where they can communicate. Being connected to Wi-Fi is not enough if the network blocks communication between devices.
- Open LocalSend on both devices and choose the sending device’s file-sharing option. Select the file and choose the receiving device shown in the app.
- Accept the incoming transfer on the receiving device if prompted, then check where the file was saved.
Exact screen labels may vary by platform and app version. If the other device does not appear or a transfer fails, check network reachability and firewall settings first.

What can prevent devices from finding each other?
- Firewall rules: A device firewall may block LocalSend traffic. Review the firewall’s allowed-app settings and allow LocalSend on the network you trust, following the operating system’s controls.
- Access-point isolation: Some routers prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi from communicating. AP isolation may be enabled on guest networks and can interfere with discovery or transfers.
- Restricted networks: Corporate, school, or public networks may limit communication between connected devices. Whether LocalSend works depends on the network’s configuration.
These are possible causes, not inevitable problems on every guest or managed network. If you cannot change the network rules, use a transfer method that works across separate networks.
When LocalSend is a better fit than emailing a file
Email and cloud storage can make files accessible across networks, but they rely on an online service. LocalSend is designed for a different case: transferring something between devices that are nearby and able to communicate over the same local network. It removes the step of sending a file through an email account or third-party transfer service, but it is not a substitute for remote access or keeping a separate backup.

The project’s documentation does not establish a particular speed advantage over email, cloud storage, or other transfer methods. Actual results depend on the devices and network; there is no basis here for promising a specific transfer rate.
