No monthly fee is required to own or use a standard Amazon Fire tablet. You buy the device upfront, though optional subscriptions, paid apps, in-app purchases, and a device-payment plan can add costs. A hardware installment is a payment toward the tablet—not a required service subscription.
What costs money—and what does not?

Amazon Kids is free; Amazon Kids+ is optional
The similar names can make the distinction easy to miss. Amazon Kids provides child profiles and parental controls, including content selection and time limits, without an added fee on compatible devices. Amazon Kids+ is a separate subscription for access to a larger children’s entertainment catalog.
An included Kids+ period is not the same as permanent inclusion. Check the Fire Kids product offer and the subscription details for the account that will use the tablet to see whether a trial is included and what it renews at. Amazon’s current article lists $7.99 per month for Prime members and $8.99 per month for non-Prime members after the included period on Kindle Kids devices, but those rates should not be assumed to apply to every Fire Kids offer. Amazon’s article specifies Kindle Kids devices.

How to check a Fire Kids offer before buying
- Look at the exact device listing. Confirm whether the bundle includes Amazon Kids+ and how long any included period lasts.
- Check the renewal terms. Verify the recurring price, when billing starts, and whether the offer depends on Prime membership or account eligibility.
- Compare what comes with the bundle. Consider the upfront device price, case or warranty inclusions, and whether the tablet has lock-screen ads—not only the sticker price.
- Review the account’s subscription details. Use the purchaser’s account and offer terms for the applicable renewal rate, because availability and pricing can vary by country, model, account, and time.
Other optional charges to watch for
Prime and Kindle Unlimited
Neither membership is required for the tablet itself. Kindle Unlimited, for example, is a separate e-book subscription used through the Kindle app. Amazon listed a U.S. Kindle Unlimited price of $11.99 per month plus taxes in a Prime Day 2025 article; that is a dated figure, not a verified current price. Check the current offer before subscribing. Amazon’s 2025 article gives the dated reference.

Apps, in-app purchases, and content
Free tablet ownership does not make every app or digital purchase free. Review an app’s listing and purchase prompts, particularly on a child profile, for charges, in-app purchases, ads, or a requirement for a separate subscription.
Ads are a device option, not a monthly fee
Some Fire tablet configurations may include personalized ads on the lock screen and cost less upfront. Amazon’s UK support information describes removing ads from eligible devices through a one-time payment that covers the device-price difference. Availability and the process may differ by region, so consult the support information and device settings for the country where the tablet was purchased.

Why older Kids bundle prices can mislead
Bundle contents and subscription names have changed over time. In 2018, Amazon announced a Fire HD 10 Kids Edition bundle for $199.99 that included one year of FreeTime Unlimited, a kid-proof case, and a two-year worry-free guarantee. Amazon also listed FreeTime Unlimited renewal prices of $2.99 per month for Prime members and $4.99 per month for non-Prime customers after that first year. FreeTime Unlimited was later renamed Amazon Kids+; those 2018 figures describe a historical offer, not current pricing. Amazon’s 2018 announcement documents that bundle.
