For routine care, focus on the removable ice bucket: discard unused ice every two weeks, and rinse and dry the bucket completely if ice has built up. Do not pour cleaner into the ice maker or try to manually defrost its internal mechanism. Samsung says the unit has automatic defrost and warns that manual defrosting can damage it.
What you can safely clean
Samsung’s care guidance supports routine attention to the removable ice bucket, not a universal wash-down procedure for the internal ice-making mechanism. Ice makers and removal steps vary by refrigerator model; consult the manual for your exact model before removing anything beyond the bucket or applying a cleaner to internal parts.
- Keep the bucket for ice only.
- Discard unused ice every two weeks to help prevent clumping and stale taste.
- If you remove the bucket to clear ice buildup, rinse it as needed and let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Seat it fully in its proper position.
- Do not pour cleaner into the ice maker or attempt to thaw its mechanism.
Samsung’s cited care sheet specifies the two-week interval for dumping unused ice and a six-month interval for changing the water filter; these are maintenance recommendations, not study findings.

Why Samsung says not to manually defrost the ice maker
Samsung states that the ice maker has an automatic defrost function and cautions: “Do not defrost your ice maker.” Attempting to defrost it manually may damage the unit. If automatic defrost appears not to be working, request service rather than trying to thaw the mechanism yourself. Do not use a hair dryer.

What cloudy, clumped, or dirty ice can mean
Cloudy white cubes
Cloudiness can be normal. Samsung explains that rapid freezing can trap minerals and gases, including oxygen and nitrogen, in the ice.
Ice clumping together
Ice left unused can clump. Empty the bucket and let fresh ice form; Samsung recommends discarding unused ice every two weeks.

Dark particles or flecks
Dark particles are not the same as normal cloudy ice. Samsung lists a dirty water supply, an expired or damaged filter, and a damaged bucket as possible causes. If the supply is dirty, Samsung suggests flushing several gallons of water. Check the filter and bucket for damage; replace the filter if needed. If particles persist or the bucket is damaged, contact Samsung support or qualified service.

Samsung identifies low water pressure as one possible cause. Its troubleshooting page states a minimum refrigerator water pressure of 20 psi and describes a dispenser check: dispense water for 10 seconds and confirm that at least 3/4 cup comes out. These are Samsung’s figures for the circumstances covered by that page, not universal guarantees; requirements can vary by model. Consult your refrigerator manual if the check suggests a pressure issue.

What to check if frost or slushy ice returns
Recurring frost can result when warm air gets into the ice compartment. Check that the refrigerator door closes fully, the bucket is aligned and seated, the bucket seal is in place, and the dispenser chute flap closes without a gap. Follow Samsung’s instructions for clearing frost, but do not use a hair dryer or attempt to manually defrost the ice maker. If frost returns after it is cleared, Samsung advises requesting service.
When to replace the water filter
Samsung recommends replacing the refrigerator water filter every six months. Its support guidance also refers to a 300-gallon or approximately six-month lifespan for relevant models; actual compatibility and requirements depend on the refrigerator and cartridge. Samsung identifies HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 filter models, but do not choose one based on that list alone. Match the cartridge to the filter location, the existing cartridge, and your refrigerator manual. Samsung warns that third-party filters may cause leaks or damage.

How to address a new taste or odor
For a new refrigerator, Samsung recommends dispensing 2 to 3 gallons of water and discarding the first batch of ice. If an older refrigerator develops a new taste or odor, replace the filter and dispense approximately 2 to 3 gallons of water afterward. These are Samsung recommendations; follow the instructions for your model and filter.

When to call for service
Stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung support or qualified service if dirt remains in the ice, the bucket or seal is visibly damaged, frost returns after clearing, or automatic defrost is not working. These conditions can require a model-specific repair; opening or washing internal components without the manufacturer’s instructions can risk damage.
