Yes—your wired Android Auto connection may still use Bluetooth for phone calls. A Google Android Auto Community FAQ says Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP) can handle calls while Android Auto is connected by USB. That is Google Community guidance, not a guarantee that every car routes calls the same way.
What USB and Bluetooth do in wired Android Auto
For wired Android Auto, Google’s setup instructions say to connect your phone to the vehicle’s USB port with a cable, then follow the on-screen setup prompts. That describes how the phone connects for the Android Auto experience; it does not mean Bluetooth must be idle.
A Google Android Auto Community FAQ post dated March 15, 2019, says Bluetooth may carry phone calls through HFP while USB is connected. The post, attributed to a Community Specialist, explains that Android manufacturers use different Bluetooth standards and hardware, and says Bluetooth HFP is the standard approach for reliable voice calls across vehicles. Google warns that community content may not be verified or up to date, so treat this as the FAQ’s explanation rather than a current universal guarantee.
This does not mean all Android Auto audio travels over Bluetooth. The FAQ specifically identifies phone calls; it does not establish that every vehicle uses the same routing for every audio source or call.

How wired and wireless setup differ
| Connection type | Google’s setup guidance | What to know about Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Android Auto | Connect a USB cable to the vehicle’s USB port and the other end to the phone, then follow the prompts. Google’s Android Auto setup guide. | A 2019 Google Community FAQ says Bluetooth HFP may be used for phone calls. That statement is not a guarantee for every vehicle. Community FAQ. |
| Wireless Android Auto | Pair the phone and car through Bluetooth during initial setup. Google recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup. What to check if Bluetooth calls do not work
- Open the Bluetooth settings for the paired car or accessory on your Android phone.
- Check that Phone audio is enabled for that device. Google includes this as a troubleshooting step for Bluetooth calls: Fix Bluetooth problems on Android.
- If calls still do not come through the car, consult the vehicle manual or manufacturer. Google cautions that not all cars can make or receive phone calls over Bluetooth.
Do you need a different USB cable?
Only if your current cable does not work for your phone and vehicle. Google’s wired setup instructions call for a USB cable, but do not require buying a new one if you already have a compatible working cable. For connector compatibility or model-specific help, check the vehicle manual or contact the manufacturer.
