Yes—Bluetooth can transmit stereo audio. For traditional Bluetooth Classic playback, stereo music normally uses A2DP; newer Bluetooth LE Audio also supports stereo, including synchronized streams for earbuds. What you hear depends on the audio mode supported by both your source device and headphones. On Windows using Classic Audio, enabling the headset microphone switches audio to HFP, which provides microphone capture but monaural playback.
How Bluetooth stereo playback works
Bluetooth audio is not a single mode. Early Bluetooth audio use centered on mono voice calls; the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) later enabled stereo media playback over Bluetooth Classic. Microsoft identifies A2DP as the Windows Classic Audio profile for media playback and lists SBC as its required codec. Support for additional codecs depends on the devices involved. Bluetooth SIG’s overview of LC3 and Microsoft’s Bluetooth Classic Audio documentation describe these roles.
So a Bluetooth connection can carry left and right audio channels, but the Bluetooth logo or version number alone does not establish that a particular source and receiver are using stereo playback. Check the audio capabilities of both devices.

Windows with Bluetooth Classic Audio
On Windows, A2DP is for playback and does not provide audio capture. When an app needs a headset’s microphone, Windows Classic Audio uses the Hands-Free Profile (HFP), which supports microphone capture alongside monaural playback. That profile change explains why music may sound less spacious or detailed during a call or recording session.

This behavior is specifically documented for Windows Classic Audio; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every operating system or Bluetooth implementation. Microsoft’s profile documentation explains the A2DP and HFP distinction.
Other devices and audio modes
Microphone behavior depends on the operating system, Bluetooth audio mode, and product capabilities. The available sources do not establish how an unspecified phone, computer, or headphone model will behave. For a particular setup, consult the capability information for both the source and the headphones rather than assuming the Windows Classic Audio behavior applies.

Classic Audio and LE Audio compared
| Mode | Main use | Stereo and microphone context |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Audio A2DP | Media playback | Supports stereo playback. On Windows, A2DP does not provide audio capture. |
| Classic Audio HFP | Headset calls and microphone access | On Windows, provides microphone capture with monaural playback. |
| LE Audio | Low-energy audio, including unicast, multi-stream, and broadcast uses | Supports synchronized multiple streams; specific capabilities depend on the products and their implementation. |
LE Audio is a separate audio architecture that operates over Bluetooth Low Energy. Its multi-stream capability can provide multiple independent, synchronized audio streams, a useful approach for true-wireless earbuds. Whether a device supports a particular LE Audio feature depends on its implementation. See the Bluetooth SIG LE Audio overview and LE Audio FAQs.
Auracast is not ordinary headphone pairing
Auracast is Bluetooth broadcast audio: one source can transmit audio to multiple compatible receivers. That differs from the familiar point-to-point connection between a source and a pair of headphones. Broadcast support should not be inferred from LE Audio support alone; check the capabilities of the specific products. The Bluetooth SIG FAQs explain the distinction.

What codec support tells you—and what it does not
A codec is only one part of the audio path. The Bluetooth SIG says listening tests found that LC3 can improve audio quality over SBC even at a 50% lower bit rate. The statement appears on the SIG’s LE Audio page, quoting Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS. The page does not state a publication year. This is a reported listening-test result, not a guarantee that every LC3 implementation will sound better than every SBC device in every situation.
Codec names and Bluetooth version numbers do not, by themselves, guarantee stereo, microphone behavior, or compatibility. The Bluetooth Basic Audio Profile specification defines LE Audio profile requirements, while actual feature support still depends on the source and receiver.

How to check whether your setup will play stereo
- Check the source device. Look up its Bluetooth audio capabilities and confirm support for the relevant mode, such as Classic Audio A2DP or LE Audio.
- Check the headphones. Confirm that they support the same audio mode. Do not assume LE Audio support means they also support Classic Audio; the Bluetooth SIG says Classic Audio is not mandatory for LE Audio products.
- Check the microphone use case. If you need stereo playback while using the headset microphone, verify behavior for your specific operating system and devices. For Windows Classic Audio, A2DP playback and HFP microphone use have the documented distinction described above.
- Check codec compatibility separately. Both devices must support a codec for it to be usable, and codec support alone does not settle profile, channel, or microphone behavior.
