If the volume slider is missing from Windows 11 Quick Settings, first check whether the problem is limited to that pane. If Sound settings still show an output device, focus on the Quick Settings display. If the taskbar volume control is also missing or Windows cannot find an output device, troubleshoot audio detection and its driver.
Open Quick Settings and check what is missing
Select the Quick Settings area on the taskbar, or press Windows key + A. Quick Settings includes a volume control. Look for whether the control is absent, hard to see, or present but unresponsive. Microsoft describes Quick Settings as a way to access frequently used settings without navigating through menus. You can also right-click Quick Settings icons for available settings or diagnostics.
Next, check the scope of the problem:
- If the volume slider is missing only from Quick Settings, continue with the checks below.
- If the taskbar speaker or volume control is also missing, check Sound settings for an output device.
- If Sound settings has no output device, use the device-detection steps in the next section.
Check the output device in Sound settings
Open Settings > System > Sound. Look for an output device, confirm that the intended device is selected, and check that its volume is not muted. If an output device appears and sound works outside Quick Settings, the issue may be limited to the pane rather than audio-device detection. Microsoft does not document one reset procedure that specifically restores a missing slider in an otherwise functioning Quick Settings pane.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If your audio device appears, check whether it is disabled and enable it if that option is available.
- If it does not appear, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Then select Action > Scan for hardware changes and check whether the device returns.
A missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading driver can make sound options disappear or appear unavailable.

Run the Audio troubleshooter and restart
On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app when an output device is missing or undetected. After it runs, restart Windows and check Sound settings again. These steps address audio-detection problems; they are not documented as a fix for every Quick Settings-only display issue.
Install the driver for your hardware if needed
If Windows still cannot detect the device and its driver is missing or incompatible, get the matching driver from the support website for your PC or sound-card manufacturer. Choose one intended for your hardware and Windows version, install it, and restart. Driver packages vary by device, so do not assume a generic driver is suitable.

Volume mixer is a separate control
The enhanced volume mixer is not the same as the main Quick Settings volume slider. In a Microsoft configuration update dated September 26, 2023, Microsoft described per-app volume controls and audio-device switching, with Windows key + Ctrl + V as the shortcut to open the mixer. Its availability or presentation can vary by Windows build; it is not a substitute for the missing Quick Settings control.
