Roku Error 003 means “Update cannot be downloaded.” It signals a failed software-update download, not proof that the Roku device is broken. Work through these six checks in order, starting with the least disruptive.
What Roku Error 003 means
Roku’s update guide describes Error 003 as an update that cannot be downloaded. Roku lists other codes separately: 001 means it cannot reach the update server, 002 indicates an internet connection that is too weak, 004 means the software update failed, and 005 means the connection timed out. The descriptions differ, even though some troubleshooting steps overlap.
Roku devices check for updates when turned on and every 24–36 hours, and updates generally install automatically without interrupting use, according to Roku’s update guidance.
Six fixes for Roku Error 003

Wait a few minutes, then retry
Roku says update services can be temporarily unavailable. Wait briefly and try again; if there is a wider service outage, retry after it has been resolved.

Confirm the network and test internet access
On the Roku, open Settings > Network and check that it is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Reconnect using the correct network name and password if necessary. Then test a website on a phone or computer connected to the same router. If those devices also lack internet access, resolve the connection problem before retrying the Roku update.
For a Roku-side network test, open Settings > Network > Check connection. Roku explains that a red X can mean the device cannot reach the router or network. If the Roku is connected to the network but has no internet access, confirm the Wi-Fi network, restart the devices, or contact your internet provider as appropriate. Improve the Roku’s Wi-Fi signal
If other devices can use the internet but the Roku’s connection is weak, move the player closer to the router, reduce obstacles, and avoid placing it behind the TV. These are simple ways to test whether the wireless path is contributing to the failed download.

- Unplug the Roku from power for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Or open Settings > System > Power > System restart.
For the router, unplug its power for 20–30 seconds, then reconnect it. Wait for it to reconnect before trying the update again.

Check for the update manually; use Ethernet if your model supports it
On the Roku, go to Home > Settings > System > System update > Check now. If the device has an Ethernet port, you can also try connecting it directly to the router. Roku says a wired connection may be faster and more reliable for an update, but only some models have Ethernet. Check your specific model before buying a cable; see Roku’s setup guidance.

Try a different internet source
Connect the Roku to another source, such as a mobile hotspot, and try the update. If it works on the alternate connection but not at home, Roku says the home internet connection is likely involved. Contact your internet provider to investigate; if the update still fails, contact Roku Support.

- If other devices on the same router also cannot access the internet, the issue is broader than the Roku.
- If those devices work but the Roku reports a weak signal, try moving the player or clearing obstacles.
- If Ethernet works where Wi-Fi does not, the wireless connection is a likely factor.
- If a hotspot works but the home connection does not, the home internet connection is likely involved.
Roku’s UK network guidance lists typical download speeds of 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD. These are streaming-quality recommendations, not a stated minimum speed for downloading a Roku software update. See Roku’s network guidance.
When to consider a factory reset
A factory reset is not an early fix for Error 003. Roku’s network guidance reserves it for extreme cases after other troubleshooting steps. Try the connection checks above first; if the failure continues, contact Roku Support rather than assuming a reset is necessary.
