In Acrobat Pro, open the two PDF versions, go to All tools > Compare files, choose the old and new files, set the comparison options that fit the documents, and select Compare. Acrobat creates a separate results document with a summary and navigable changes. The interface may look different as Adobe rolls out its newer experience. Adobe’s Compare Files guide documents this workflow.
Compare two PDF versions
- Open both PDF versions in Acrobat.
- Select All tools > Compare files.
- Check the old and new file selections. Select Change File to choose a different version; use the swap control if the versions are in the wrong positions.
- Choose the comparison settings that match the documents. You can also limit the comparison to page ranges by entering page numbers in the Old File and New File fields.
- Select Compare. Acrobat analyzes the files and creates a new comparison results document.

Choose the right comparison settings
Start with how the content is structured and what you need to detect. The document type affects how Acrobat matches pages and interprets changes.

Review the comparison report
The first page of the generated results document summarizes the differences. Use Go to First Change, Next Change, and Previous Change to move through them.
- Side-by-side view: The old version appears on the left and the new version on the right. Highlighted bands connect corresponding changes.
- Single-page view: Shows the changes for one file at a time.
- Filter: Controls which categories of changes appear. Annotations, formatting, and background differences are off by default, so check the filter if an expected difference is missing.

Save the comparison results
Save the generated results document if you need to preserve or share the review. On Windows, use the hamburger menu; on macOS, use the File menu. Saving the comparison report preserves the results as a document separate from the two PDFs you compared. Adobe Acrobat Help
