MSI mode means message-signaled interrupts, a way for a PCI/PCIe device to notify the processor that it needs attention. It changes interrupt delivery; it does not add GPU rendering power. The available evidence does not show a reliable general increase in Windows game FPS, smoother frame times, or lower input lag from manually forcing a GPU into MSI mode.

What MSI mode means

In this context, MSI does not mean a graphics-card brand. It means message-signaled interrupts. With a traditional line-based interrupt, a device signals the processor through a dedicated physical interrupt line. With MSI, it instead writes a value to a particular memory address. Microsoft describes the mechanism in its Introduction to Message-Signaled Interrupts.

The change is about how a device reports that it needs attention. It does not directly raise GPU clock speeds, increase memory bandwidth, or add shader resources.

How MSI differs from MSI-X

MSI-X is a more programmable extension of MSI. Windows driver documentation describes these capabilities:

Interrupt method Documented message capacity What distinguishes it
Multi-message MSI Up to 16 messages Message-signaled interrupt mechanism introduced as an alternative to line-based interrupts.
MSI-X Up to 2,048 messages Uses a programmable table of interrupt sources.

These are technical limits, not speed ratings or evidence of better game performance. Microsoft says Windows automatically uses MSI-X when a device supports both MSI and MSI-X. See its MSI documentation and guidance on using message-signaled interrupts.

Does MSI mode speed up a GPU?

There is no established general Windows gaming uplift from manually changing a GPU to MSI mode. The mechanism could matter if interrupt delivery itself were a bottleneck, but that possibility is not the same as evidence of higher FPS or lower latency in ordinary games.

A secondary analysis reports roughly threefold lower interrupt latency in a constrained Intel benchmark using MSI rather than IO-APIC delivery. That setup used a PCIe exerciser and a custom Linux kernel module; it was not a Windows gaming PC or a consumer GPU test. It did not measure FPS, game frame-time consistency, or end-to-end input latency. Treating that result as proof that MSI mode improves gaming would overstate what it shows.

The evidence also does not establish a current default-setting matrix for every NVIDIA or AMD GPU, driver, and original-equipment-manufacturer system. A blanket claim that all such cards already use MSI or MSI-X by default—or that changing the setting will improve them—is not supported.

What the Windows registry setting controls

Microsoft documents MSISupported as a REG_DWORD value under a device’s hardware key, in the Interrupt ManagementMessageSignaledInterruptProperties subkey. A value of 1 enables MSI support. Microsoft presents this as driver and device configuration that a driver’s INF file should set during installation, alongside configuration such as MessageNumberLimit; it is not described as a general gaming optimization switch. See the documentation for registry settings for MSI.

Should you change the setting?

If your PC is stable, leave interrupt configuration to the supported driver and Windows Plug and Play resource process. Changing a registry value in pursuit of an unproven gaming gain adds risk without an established general benefit.

Manual changes are device- and driver-specific. A secondary analysis describes a Windows StorAHCI compatibility case in which enabling MSI for certain storage devices caused incomplete I/O and controller resets; disabling MSI resolved that case. This is a reason not to apply blanket registry changes across devices, not evidence that changing GPU MSI mode causes the same storage failure.

A third-party PowerShell utility’s README says the utility backs up the prior registry state, calls for a reboot after a change, and provides a rollback path; its author also acknowledges that a device may rarely fail to start. Those are the utility author’s statements, not Microsoft’s endorsement or evidence that the utility is needed.
