If your Fire TV keeps going back to the Home screen, start with a restart, then check whether one app triggers the return. Continue through app updates, remote input, and—when the picture or power is also acting up—power and HDMI checks. Save a factory reset for last. This order helps narrow down the problem; it is not a guaranteed fix, and menu labels and procedures vary between Fire TV streaming devices and Fire TV Smart TVs.
First, identify what “going back to Home” means
A return to the Home screen is not necessarily the same as a device rebooting, freezing, or losing Wi-Fi. Note what happens immediately before the screen changes: does it occur after opening one app, while navigating menus, or alongside a frozen or blank picture? Those details help you choose the relevant checks below. Amazon’s support material covers related problems, but does not identify one universal cause for repeated returns to Home.
1. Restart Fire TV
A restart is a low-risk first step. Use the instructions for your device type and follow the model-specific guidance; Amazon’s procedures differ by symptom and device.
- Remote shortcut: On supported devices, hold Select and Play/Pause together for several seconds. Amazon specifies 3–5 seconds for one Smart TV procedure and about 5 seconds for a frozen-screen procedure.
- Power cycle: For the Smart TV procedure, unplug the TV from power, wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it. If you have a separate Fire TV device, use its model-specific restart instructions rather than assuming the TV procedure applies.

2. Check whether a particular app triggers the return
If Fire TV returns Home only after you open one app, focus on that app before changing the whole device. Try clearing its cache first if that option is available. Clearing app data can remove app-specific saved information, so make sure you know how to sign back in before using that option.
App controls are available through Fire TV settings, though the menu names can vary. Amazon’s Silk troubleshooting page recommends clearing app data or cache for Silk problems and points to app management in settings; it addresses Silk failures, not every app or this exact Home-screen symptom.

3. Update the app and Fire TV software
Install an available update for the app that seems involved, then check for a Fire TV software update. Amazon’s device guidance places software updates under the My Fire TV or Device & Software area, depending on the device and menu version. For an app, check its listing in the Appstore for an update option. Labels and availability may differ by model.

4. Rule out unintended remote input
If Fire TV jumps Home while the picture remains responsive, inspect the remote. A stuck Home button or another button sending repeated input could explain unexpected navigation, but it is only a possibility to test—not an established general cause.
- Check that the Home button and other buttons move freely and are not being pressed by a case or obstruction.
- If the remote is unresponsive, replace its batteries and pair or reset it using the instructions for that exact remote model.
- Amazon recommends AAA alkaline batteries in its Smart TV unresponsive guidance; check your remote’s required size before replacing them.

5. Check power and HDMI when the picture or device is also failing
These checks are most relevant if Fire TV is unresponsive or you also see a blank or frozen picture. They are not a default explanation for ordinary navigation back to Home.

- TV input: Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the Fire TV device.
- HDMI path: Temporarily connect the device directly to the TV, bypassing an HDMI hub or receiver, when troubleshooting a blank or frozen display.

6. Check storage if your device offers that information
On supported devices, Fire TV settings show available storage. If space is low, remove apps you no longer use. Amazon also describes Auto Offload, which can free space by offloading infrequently used apps, but the feature is not available on every model or profile configuration. Storage management is worth checking when relevant; Amazon’s published guidance does not establish low storage as the cause of repeated returns to Home.

7. Factory reset only if the other checks fail
A factory reset is disruptive: it returns the device to factory defaults, so have your account and Wi-Fi details ready to set it up again. The reset procedure differs between a Fire TV Smart TV and a separate streaming device. Use the instructions for your exact model rather than following a procedure meant for another device type.
Amazon includes reset among its device functions and presents it after restart for ongoing reboot problems.
