To set up a VPN on a router, first decide which job you need: a VPN client sends some or all devices on your home network through a remote VPN service; a VPN server lets your phone or computer connect back to your home network while you are away. These are different configurations, so choose the matching path below. Before following any steps, check that your exact router model, hardware revision, region and firmware support the required VPN mode and protocol.
Choose the right VPN setup
| Router mode | What connects to what | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| VPN client | Your router connects outward to a remote VPN service. It can send all connected devices or, on supported models, selected devices through that connection. | You want home devices to use a VPN provider without configuring VPN software on each one. |
| VPN server | A remote phone, laptop or other client connects inward to your home router. | You want to reach devices or services on your home network while away. Depending on the router’s access settings, the connection may also route internet traffic through your home connection. |
Vendor documentation uses different menu names and separates these functions. For example, TP-Link’s VPN client guide describes routing selected devices through a third-party VPN server, while its travel-router guide covers both client and server use. Treat the paths as alternatives, not interchangeable ways to turn on a single generic VPN setting.
Before you configure anything
Confirm the exact router and firmware
Check the support page for your precise regional model and hardware revision, then confirm its current firmware and supported VPN modes. Features vary: TP-Link says VPN client support is limited to compatible routers, ASUS limits VPN Fusion to some models, and Omada’s gateway instructions specify model and firmware requirements. Do not assume that a feature listed for one product in a brand’s range exists on yours.

Get the right profile and credentials
For a router acting as a client, obtain the manual-configuration details from the VPN provider or the administrator of the remote VPN server. OpenVPN setups commonly use an .ovpn profile and may also need a username, password or related certificate files. WireGuard may use a .conf file or require peer keys, an endpoint and allowed-IP settings. A consumer VPN subscription does not necessarily include router-ready configuration files; check the provider’s instructions for manual router setup.

Use the instructions for your interface
Stock router firmware, a controller-managed business gateway and custom firmware such as OpenWrt have different menus and configuration requirements. Follow the current guide for your exact product and interface rather than copying menu paths from another model. If the router lacks the mode or protocol you need, consider a compatible router or a supported custom-firmware route only if you can follow the device-specific installation process.
Set up the router as a VPN client
This path connects your home network to a remote VPN service. Depending on the router, you may be able to route every device through the tunnel or assign only chosen devices.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Check compatibility. On the router’s regional support page, confirm that the exact model and firmware support VPN client mode and your chosen protocol.
- Download the provider’s manual-configuration files. Get the profile for the protocol and server you intend to use, plus any separate login details or certificates. Keep related files together if the router’s instructions require them.
- Open the router’s VPN client settings. Sign in to its management interface or app and locate the VPN client section. The menu name and location depend on the product. ASUS documents its own web-GUI process in its VPN client setup guide.
- Add and enable the profile. Import the profile or enter the requested peer details, then supply any separate credentials. If the router supports per-device routing, select the devices that should use the tunnel.
- Verify connection and routing. Confirm the router reports a connection, then test a device that should use the VPN. Check its public IP, DNS behavior and route; a connected indicator by itself does not prove that the intended device’s traffic is using the tunnel.
Limits shown in a vendor interface apply only to that interface. For example, TP-Link’s cited VPN client page supports up to six profiles but only one active profile at a time; this is not a general router limit. That same page says an uploaded OpenVPN configuration file must be under 20 KB and accepts one configuration file. GL.iNet documents a different import flow that can accept a single .ovpn file or an archive containing related files. Follow your own router’s file requirements.
Set up the router as a VPN server
Use this path when you want to connect from outside your home to resources on your home network. The router is the server; your away-from-home device is the client.

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Check server support. Confirm that your exact router and firmware offer VPN server mode and identify the supported protocol.
- Choose the access scope. Decide whether remote clients should reach only home-network resources or also route their internet traffic through the home connection, if the router offers that choice.
- Enable and configure the server. In the router’s VPN server settings, select the protocol and access options, then create or export the required certificate or client profile.
- Configure each remote device. Transfer the exported profile securely and import it into a compatible VPN client on each phone or computer. Follow the router’s directions for credentials and certificates.
- Test from outside the home network. Connect using a remote network, such as mobile data, and verify that the intended home resources are reachable. If internet traffic is meant to use the home connection, check the remote device’s public IP and routing as well.
TP-Link’s travel-router VPN guide illustrates the access-scope choice for its OpenVPN server example: a remote client can be configured for home-network access alone or for internet and home-network access. Options vary by router.
OpenVPN, WireGuard and advanced router setups
OpenVPN
OpenVPN client setup usually starts with a provider- or administrator-supplied .ovpn profile. The router may also require account credentials or certificate files. Upload rules differ between manufacturers, so use the exact router guide for file size, file count and whether related files must be bundled.

WireGuard
WireGuard is available only on selected models in some product ranges. Depending on the interface, setup may mean importing a .conf file or entering peer keys, an endpoint and allowed IP ranges, with optional DNS or MTU values. Use the values supplied for your specific peer; do not substitute settings from an unrelated example.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBusiness gateways and controller interfaces
Business gateway workflows can depend on both the model and whether it is managed through a controller or configured standalone. Omada’s OpenVPN client guide specifies certificate-plus-account support for ER7206 firmware 1.2.3 Build 20221104 or later and ER605 V2 firmware 2.1.1 Build 20230115 or later; the guide lists certificate-only support for ER605 V1. These are dated, model-specific requirements from that guide, not a guarantee about later releases. Check current release notes and the interface you actually use.
OpenWrt
OpenWrt client setup is an advanced path involving package installation and network, firewall, route and DNS configuration. Its guides cover OpenVPN clients and WireGuard clients. Follow the instructions for your OpenWrt version and setup; installing custom firmware is a separate, device-specific process, not a universal shortcut for enabling a VPN.

The router will not connect
- Recheck that the router supports the selected mode, protocol and profile format. A provider’s profile may not be compatible with every router interface.
- Confirm that the username, password, keys, certificates and profile came from the correct provider or VPN administrator. If the same profile cannot connect on another supported device, ask the provider or administrator to verify it.
- Check whether your router’s LAN subnet overlaps the remote VPN network. ASUS notes that matching subnets can prevent a client connection; changing the router’s LAN subnet may resolve the conflict.
- Read the router’s connection state and logs for authentication, certificate or network errors. GL.iNet exposes connection state and sent/received data; Omada documents checking tunnel status.
- If the profile works on another device but not the router, check for a router firmware update and consult the model-specific setup guide.
The VPN says connected, but traffic is not going through it
- Confirm that the device you are testing is assigned to the VPN if the router uses per-device routing.
- Check the test device’s public IP, DNS behavior and route. Compare a device intended to use the tunnel with one that should remain on the regular connection, if your router supports that split.
- Review the router’s routing and DNS settings using the instructions for its platform. OpenWrt’s client guides include route and DNS checks; a tunnel status alone does not establish which traffic uses it.
A custom-firmware installation fails
For OpenWrt, verify the exact device and hardware revision and use the device-specific factory-install instructions. Check the firmware image checksum before flashing; stop if it does not match. OpenWrt warns that a corrupt image can brick a device and recommends a wired Ethernet connection where available during first installation. Its guides cover factory installation and upgrading through LuCI.
