If your Windows 11 PC will not wake from sleep, first press its power button; some models also wake with a keyboard key, mouse click, or opening the laptop lid. If the PC seems active but the display stays black, try the graphics-reset shortcut Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. For recurring problems, Windows’ powercfg commands can help identify wake sources and supported sleep states, but they diagnose rather than automatically repair the problem.

1. Try the wake control your PC supports

Press the PC’s power button once. Microsoft says this wakes most PCs, while some models can also wake from a keyboard key, mouse click, or opening the laptop lid. As Microsoft notes, “not all PCs are the same,” so the controls that work depend on the computer.

If those inputs do nothing, consult the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model. A dock, USB device, or firmware setting may affect wake behavior, and there is no single wake-control procedure that applies to every Windows 11 PC.

2. Check whether the PC resumed but the display stayed blank

If lights, fans, or other signs suggest the computer is running but the screen remains black, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft lists this shortcut for resetting the graphics driver from a blank or black screen. It may help when the display is the problem; it is not a universal fix for a PC that failed to resume.

If the PC remains unresponsive and you have no other option, Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance describes holding the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown. Use this only as a last resort: it interrupts the current session and may cause unsaved work to be lost.

3. Check the device that failed after resume

If Windows resumed but a connected monitor, printer, scanner, or other peripheral is not responding, disconnect and reconnect that device. You can also restart the PC and check whether the peripheral’s drivers are current. A failing peripheral does not by itself establish that the PC needs replacement hardware.

4. Investigate a recurring sleep or wake problem with powercfg

Windows includes diagnostic commands that report power and wake information. Open Terminal or Command Prompt and run the relevant command:

Command What it reports
powercfg /lastwake Information about what woke the system from its last sleep transition.
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed Devices currently configured to wake the PC.
powercfg /availablesleepstates Sleep states available on the system and reasons some states may be unavailable.
powercfg /sleepstudy A power-transition diagnostic report.

These commands provide evidence for troubleshooting; they do not change settings or guarantee a repair. For command details, see Microsoft’s Powercfg command-line options. If you are not comfortable using Terminal or Command Prompt, ask your PC administrator or manufacturer for help interpreting the results.

5. Review sleep settings and model-specific wake options

To review when Windows puts the computer to sleep, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. These controls set timeouts; changing them is not a documented universal remedy for a failure to wake.

For wake behavior involving a dock, USB device, presence sensor, or firmware option, use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. Presence-sensing features depend on device capabilities and organizational settings, so they may not appear on every PC. On supported S3 systems, some USB-connected presence sensors may also require USB Wake Support in BIOS; do not assume that setting applies to every computer.

Choose the next step by symptom

  • Display is black, but the PC appears active: try Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B.
  • No apparent response to any wake input: try the model’s expected physical control, then consult manufacturer guidance and use powercfg diagnostics if the issue repeats.
  • Only a connected device is malfunctioning: reconnect it or restart the PC, then check its driver.
  • The problem recurs or involves advanced sleep behavior: review diagnostic output and seek model-specific support.
