If your PC says a hard drive may fail, copy important files to a separate device as soon as possible. A S.M.A.R.T. or predictive-failure alert is a risk signal, not a dependable countdown; it cannot tell you how long the drive will keep working. Once your files are safe, identify the disk and follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic and replacement guidance.
What should I do when my computer says my hard drive may fail?
- Back up first. Copy your important files to a separate device, such as an external drive, or another suitable destination you already have. Do not wait to shop for hardware if you can make a safe copy now. Microsoft recommends backing up after a critical storage warning, and Western Digital advises backing up accessible data as quickly as possible when a S.M.A.R.T. failure is reported.
- Limit unnecessary use of the drive. Avoid treating it as safe for continued normal work just because it is still accessible or a test passes. If files are inaccessible, or the data is especially valuable, consider professional recovery before repeated troubleshooting attempts.
- Find out which disk triggered the alert. Do not assume it is the drive that contains Windows. BIOS or manufacturer utilities may report a warning, and a PC may have more than one storage device.
- After protecting the data, check the drive maker’s diagnostic and warranty guidance. A failed critical S.M.A.R.T. attribute is grounds to plan replacement. Diagnostics can help clarify the reported condition, but do not let testing delay a backup.
What does a hard drive failure warning mean?
S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology. A predictive-failure alert means the device is reporting a reliability problem. Microsoft’s documentation defines a nonzero failure-prediction value as the device currently predicting imminent failure. Western Digital Support describes S.M.A.R.T. failures as indicating that a drive is at risk of imminent failure.
That warning is not a timer. The available official guidance does not establish how long an individual drive will continue working, so no exact number of days or failure date can be inferred from the alert. A drive that remains readable may still fail, and a passing test does not guarantee it is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow can I identify the disk and warning in Windows?
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes. Select the disk in question, open Properties, and review its reported status. Microsoft describes critical storage conditions that include low spare capacity, degraded reliability, and a read-only state.

The wording and location of an alert can vary by PC, BIOS, Windows version, storage type, and manufacturer. Windows’ built-in health monitoring covers NVMe SSDs, but not SATA SSDs or HDDs. Therefore, not seeing a critical warning in Windows is not proof that a conventional hard drive or SATA SSD is healthy.
Should I trust the S.M.A.R.T. numbers?
Do not interpret a raw S.M.A.R.T. attribute number as a universal measure of remaining life. Manufacturers define attributes and thresholds, and raw values are vendor-specific. The same-looking value may not mean the same thing across drive makers or models. Use the drive manufacturer’s explanation and diagnostic guidance for the specific device rather than relying on a generic chart.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Windows may also display an estimated remaining life as an approximate percentage based on the manufacturer’s prediction. Microsoft notes that a value below 0% does not automatically mean the device has failed. Treat displayed health information as a warning to protect data, not as a precise forecast.
When should I replace the drive?
After backing up, check the manufacturer’s diagnostics and warranty instructions. Western Digital explains that its drives can be checked with short and extended self-tests; consult the documentation for the specific drive and do not run tests before securing accessible files. Western Digital’s guidance says a failed critical attribute means the device is bad and should be replaced.

Choose a replacement only after identifying what your computer supports. The generic warning does not specify a suitable drive size, form factor, interface, capacity, or model. Confirm compatibility using the computer or drive manufacturer’s specifications. An external drive can serve as a backup destination; it is not automatically the correct internal replacement.
