If DISM is not working in Windows 11, start by recording the full error message and running the repair commands in an elevated Command Prompt. Check the image, attempt repair, then run System File Checker (SFC). If RestoreHealth says the source files could not be found, DISM may need a different repair source; the error code and servicing log can help narrow down what failed.
Run DISM correctly in Windows 11
For an online repair, DISM works on the Windows image currently running on your PC. Open Command Prompt as administrator: open Start, search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Microsoft’s instructions use an elevated prompt for this workflow.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
/ScanHealth scans the component store for corruption. /RestoreHealth scans and attempts repairs. Microsoft says these operations can take several minutes; a slow-moving or apparently unchanged progress display alone does not establish that DISM is stuck. Avoid closing the window solely because the operation is taking longer than expected. Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance documents these commands.
Choose a repair source if RestoreHealth cannot find files
For an online image, DISM can use Windows Update or a configured repair source. If Windows Update cannot provide the needed content, Microsoft documents using files from a working Windows installation or Windows installation media, such as USB or DVD. The chosen source must actually contain the required repair files; an arbitrary Windows folder or installation image is not guaranteed to work.

| Repair-source path | When it applies | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or configured source | Ordinary online repair when the configured source can provide the needed files. | Internet availability and servicing policy can affect access. With /LimitAccess, DISM does not use Windows Update. |
| Explicit source, such as a working Windows installation or Windows media | When Windows Update cannot supply the content or an administrator directs DISM to another source. | Confirm that the source contains the repair files required by the affected image. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every source. |
Microsoft documents the /Source option for specifying locations to search and /LimitAccess for preventing Windows Update from being used. The available guidance does not establish a universal Windows 11 recipe for matching every source to a particular edition, build, language, or image index. Don’t assume any ISO or media will match. Consult the instructions for the specific source you have before using it. Microsoft’s image repair guide explains source selection, and its Repair-WindowsImage reference describes source and access-limit behavior.
Run SFC after DISM
Microsoft’s Windows Update corruption workflow recommends running System File Checker after DISM. In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow
When it finishes, restart Windows and retry the Windows Update operation that failed. This follow-up is part of Microsoft’s documented update-repair sequence; it is not a guarantee that every DISM error or update failure will be resolved. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance gives this sequence.
What common DISM errors can mean
Error codes are useful clues, not complete diagnoses. Record the exact code and message, then compare them with the relevant log details.

“The source files could not be found” or 0x800f081f
Microsoft identifies 0x800f081f as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: the source for a package or file was not found. The documented mitigation is to repair with DISM RestoreHealth and run SFC. If RestoreHealth itself reports that source files could not be found, review the source options above rather than assuming the error identifies one particular cause. Microsoft’s common Windows Update errors table lists this mapping.
0x800f0831
Microsoft associates 0x800f0831 with component-store corruption. Its listed mitigation is DISM RestoreHealth, followed by SFC and a restart. Check the full message and log before treating the code as a complete explanation of the failure.

0x80070005
0x80070005 means access was denied. Microsoft advises finding the matching error and timestamp in CBS.log, then identifying the file, registry key, or other object whose permissions caused the denial. Don’t broadly reset permissions based on the code alone; identify the affected object and investigate its permissions first. Microsoft’s error guidance covers this error and its log-based investigation.
Check the servicing log when DISM fails
Microsoft says DISM writes servicing details to %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. If a repair fails, use the exact error message and timestamp to find related entries in that log. The surrounding entries can help identify which file or operation failed and whether the problem points to a missing source or access denial. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies CBS.log as the servicing log to check.
What CheckHealth says about an image
Microsoft’s image-repair guidance describes CheckHealth as reporting whether an image is healthy, repairable, or non-repairable. A repairable image can be handled with RestoreHealth. For a non-repairable image, Microsoft’s guidance is to discard that image and start again. That is image-servicing guidance, not a blanket instruction that every Windows 11 PC with a failed DISM run must be reset or reinstalled. Microsoft’s image repair guide covers these health states.
