The feature is 7-Zip’s password-based encryption for 7z archives. It can protect archived file contents with AES-256, and an additional header-encryption option can conceal filenames until someone opens the archive with the password. It protects the archive’s confidentiality; 7-Zip is not a malware scanner or a general-purpose security suite.
What 7-Zip’s encryption protects
7-Zip’s official 7z format documentation describes AES-256 encryption. The encryption key is derived from the password using a SHA-256-based function, with repeated iterations intended to make exhaustive password guessing more costly. 7-Zip’s 7z format documentation explains the mechanism.

When header encryption is enabled, filenames are concealed along with the archived contents. Without it, someone may be able to see what files an archive contains even if they cannot open those files. With it, the archive’s file listing is also hidden until the correct password is supplied.
What encryption does not do
- It does not guarantee an archive cannot be cracked. The password still matters: use a long, unique password rather than a guessable one.
- It does not protect your computer from malware. Encryption controls access to archived data; it does not scan files or make unsafe files harmless.
- It does not replace keeping 7-Zip updated. Archive software processes files, and vulnerabilities in that processing can matter whether or not an archive is encrypted.
Keep 7-Zip current
At the time of the official download page’s October 5, 2026 listing, the latest Windows release shown was 7-Zip 26.04. The project history records security fixes in versions 25.00 and 25.01 related to symbolic-link processing during extraction. A 2026 GitHub Security Lab advisory says memory-access issues affecting 26.00 were fixed in 26.01; NIST’s NVD record for CVE-2026-48101 likewise identifies 26.0.1 as a fix for an uninitialized-memory disclosure in the UEFI capsule parser. These records concern earlier versions, not the 26.04 release listed on the download page. Check the official 7-Zip download page for current releases.

When this feature is useful
Use a password-protected 7z archive when you need to share or store files with an added layer of confidentiality, especially when revealing the filenames would itself disclose sensitive information. Make sure the recipient’s archive software supports 7z encryption, and share the password separately from the archive when practical. If you lose the password, you may not be able to recover the files.
7-Zip is free software, according to its official download page. The exact current Windows interface labels and click sequence are not established here, so consult the application’s own current interface rather than relying on guessed instructions.
