There is no single correct distance for every home projector. The right projector throw distance depends on the model’s lens, the image width you want, and—if it has one—its optical zoom range. Estimate the distance by multiplying image width by throw ratio, then confirm the placement with the exact model’s calculator or manual.
How to calculate projector throw distance
Throw ratio is the distance from the projector lens to the projection surface divided by the image width. Rearranged, the estimate is:
Throw distance = image width × throw ratio
For example, ProjectorCentral’s calculator guidance illustrates that a projector with a 2.0 throw ratio needs 2 feet of throw for each foot of image width. That demonstrates the formula; it is not a universal placement recommendation. ProjectorCentral’s calculator guidance also defines short throw as a throw ratio of 0.4 or less.

The basic formula uses horizontal image width, not diagonal screen size. Decide on the screen’s aspect ratio, then find its width; alternatively, enter the desired diagonal and aspect ratio in the projector maker’s calculator or use its manual’s distance table.

Check the exact projector’s ratio and zoom range
Look up the model’s throw ratio. If it has a zoom lens, check both the minimum and maximum throw ratios: optical zoom lets you change image size within the supported range without moving the projector, but it does not make every room distance workable. ProjectorCentral’s calculator and Epson’s projector distance guidance explain why the calculation and supported range are model-specific.
How to check whether the projector fits your room
- Choose the image. Set the intended size and aspect ratio, and determine the horizontal width.
- Find the available throw. Measure the space from the planned projector lens position to the wall or screen. Use the lens as the starting point, not the projector’s back panel; check the model documentation for any different measurement convention.
- Compare the distance with the model’s range. Multiply image width by the throw ratio for an estimate. For a zoom lens, confirm the distance falls between the model’s supported minimum and maximum. Epson’s guide provides distances for the particular models it covers and directs users to its calculator for other sizes: Epson projector distance guidance.
- Verify before fixing the position. Use the exact model’s throw calculator or manual projection-distance table for the final check. Calculator information is model-specific and can change; ProjectorCentral advises confirming it before making final placement decisions.
What affects the placement
Lens type and zoom
Different lenses can produce different image sizes from the same distance. A fixed lens offers less placement flexibility than an optical zoom lens. When a projector must sit close to the screen, a short-throw model may be worth considering, but check that its ratio supports both your available distance and desired image width.

Alignment and support
Position the projector squarely in front of the screen rather than at an angle. Epson recommends a sturdy, level surface or a compatible mount. Its placement guide states: “Place the projector so it squarely faces the screen, not at an angle.” Epson projector placement guide

Keep the projector’s intake and exhaust areas unobstructed, and place it within reach of a suitable power outlet. Follow the exact model’s installation instructions. If you choose a ceiling installation, use a ceiling mount and verify that it fits the projector and meets its fastening requirements; mounts are not automatically universal.

If the calculated position does not work
- The projector would sit too close: Check whether the model’s supported throw range reaches the distance you have. A short-throw model may fit better, but verify its ratio against your image width.
- The projector would sit too far away: Check the model’s maximum throw ratio and zoom range against the available distance. If the desired image size is outside that range, a different projector or target image size may be needed.
- The calculation seems inconsistent: Confirm that you used image width rather than diagonal, measured from the lens, and used the correct aspect ratio and exact model’s throw data.
