They can replace the basic loop of saving, finding, and copying reusable text—but not automatically the cloud service’s sync, sharing, or backup. The proposed six-command workflow uses add, list, show, search, rm, and copy to manage snippets from a terminal. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on where you work and how you want snippets stored.
What the six-command workflow does
The approach described by ke jia in a DEV Community article replaces a snippet manager’s capture-and-retrieve interface with shell commands. Its proposed installation command is npx @wuchunjie/snippetx. The article describes the commands below, but the package’s current availability, behavior, maintenance, and platform support have not been independently verified.
| Command | Proposed job |
|---|---|
add |
Read text from standard input and save it under a name, with an optional language tag. |
list |
Display saved snippets, with an optional language filter. |
show |
Print a snippet selected by ID. |
search |
Search snippet names and contents. |
rm |
Delete a snippet. |
copy |
Write a snippet to standard output so it can be piped to a clipboard utility. |
The design is simple: terminal input stands in for a capture form, text search for browsing collections, and standard output plus a clipboard utility for a copy button. The article proposes a local file or Git-tracked directory in place of hosted storage. That is a suggested workflow, not a benchmark or an independently tested comparison.
When a local CLI is a good fit
A terminal-based manager is most practical when snippets are mostly text or code, and both creating and using them already happen near a shell. A command can fit naturally into an existing workflow, and searching content can be more useful than remembering a collection name or shortcut.

- HAPPILY EVER FASTER — Along with its faster CPU and unified memory, M5 features a more powerful GPU with a Neural Accelerator built into each core, delivering faster AI performance. So you can blaze through demanding workloads at mind-bending speeds.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- ALL-DAY BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Pro delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in.
- APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*
- Good fit: you regularly work in a terminal, want to search by text, and are comfortable managing files and backups.
- Less convenient: you often capture snippets from a browser or phone, rely on a graphical interface, or need effortless access across devices and teammates.
- Check before adopting: confirm the package installs and works on your operating system, determine where it stores data, and test the actual search and clipboard behavior you need.
No head-to-head test establishes that this approach is faster or better than a hosted service, editor feature, or notes app. The benefit is a workflow choice: fewer context changes for terminal-centered work, in exchange for taking responsibility for storage and synchronization.
What changes when snippets are stored locally
Moving snippets to a local file removes that particular provider-held copy, but local storage does not prove that the contents are secure. The computer, user account, backups, and any folder-sync or Git setup all become part of the threat model. A synced folder or remote Git repository can create additional copies elsewhere.

The DEV article presents an unnamed service and an alleged breach as part of its first-person rationale. It does not identify the provider, incident date, or supporting incident report, so the account cannot establish that a particular service was breached. It also supplies no verifiable subscription price or billing terms.

What local storage gives up—and what to check
A cloud service may handle synchronization, sharing, backups, and browser-based capture. A local CLI may provide direct shell composition and keep the primary store on your machine, but those conveniences are not interchangeable. Before switching, compare the specific capabilities you actually use.
- Search: can you search content, titles, tags, language, or only shortcuts?
- Capture and retrieval: can you save text from the places where you encounter it and retrieve it with acceptable friction?
- Clipboard and shell use: does retrieval integrate with your clipboard utility and command-line workflows?
- Sync, sharing, and recovery: how will you access snippets on other devices, share them, restore deleted data, and keep version history?
- Access and secret handling: where are the files, who can read them, and what is included in backups or remote repositories?
- Setup and compatibility: which platforms and shells are supported, and what maintenance will the workflow require?
A separate project named snippetbox documents fuzzy search across title, tags, language, and content, clipboard support, scriptable commands, and a JSON store. Its README also claims that on Unix-like systems it uses 0600 file and 0700 directory permissions, writes atomically, strips terminal escape and control sequences from rendered output, rejects imports over 16 MiB, and never executes snippet content. These are the project’s claims, not audited findings—and snippetbox is distinct from snippetx, so its documentation says nothing about snippetx’s features or safeguards.

Editor snippets are another option
If snippets are mainly used while editing code, an editor’s built-in snippet system may be more direct than either a hosted library or a separate CLI. Visual Studio’s documentation covers inserting and replacing code snippets, including fields for adapting inserted text. Those features serve an editor workflow; they are not evidence that any snippet manager is secure or a replacement for shared storage.
Microsoft advises: “Treat snippets downloaded from the internet like other downloaded code. Download snippets only from sources that you trust, and inspect the snippet code and metadata before you import or run it.” The guidance is in Microsoft’s Visual Studio code-snippet documentation, updated August 28, 2026. Review snippets before importing or running them, regardless of where you found them.

Is replacing a cloud snippet box worth it?
Six commands can cover the core actions—capture, list, inspect, search, delete, and copy—if the proposed tool works in your environment. The switch makes most sense when terminal access and local control matter more to you than built-in cross-device sync, sharing, and managed recovery. Treat claims of daily time saved as personal rhetoric, not measured productivity data; the article offers no sourced statistic.
