A system can accept a request without completing the action it describes. In HTTP, 202 Accepted explicitly means processing is unfinished—and the request may never be acted upon. A different uncertainty arises when a system might have performed the action but its reply is lost. In either case, show what is known, not what a user hopes happened.
What “accepted” means in HTTP
RFC 9110 defines 202 Accepted as acceptance for processing, not completion. The standard puts it plainly: “The 202 (Accepted) status code indicates that the request has been accepted for processing, but the processing has not been completed.” Acceptance is noncommittal: the request might or might not eventually be acted upon.
HTTP does not later resend a status code from the asynchronous operation. RFC 9110 says a 202 response ought to describe the current status and point to or embed a status monitor that can provide an estimate of fulfillment. That gives the caller a way to check progress rather than treating the initial acknowledgment as a final result. RFC 9110, Section 15.3.3

These situations should not be collapsed into one generic “pending” or “failed” message. They represent different evidence:
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
- Accepted, still processing: The server has acknowledged acceptance for processing, but the work is unfinished. The response should explain the current status and provide a status-monitor path or equivalent information.
- Outcome unknown: A timeout or lost response leaves the caller without confirmation. The action may have completed, may still be underway, or may never have happened. A missing reply is not proof of failure.
The distinction matters because a caller can check the status of accepted work, while an unknown outcome requires finding out what happened before deciding whether to submit the action again.
When a retry can create a duplicate
RFC 9110 defines an idempotent request as one whose repeated identical requests have the same intended effect on the server as a single request. It identifies safe methods, PUT, and DELETE as idempotent under that definition. Other side effects, such as logging, may still occur with each request.

The method name alone is not a guarantee about every application’s behavior. The actual operation and its side effects matter. RFC 9110 cautions clients against automatically retrying a non-idempotent request unless they know the operation is idempotent in practice or can establish that the original request was not applied. RFC 9110, Section 9.2.2
If a consequential request times out, blindly sending it again can repeat an action that already took effect. First check whether the operation has a documented safe-retry contract. If not, look up the prior attempt or reconcile the affected resource before retrying.

Choose confirmation language that matches the evidence
Labels should identify the stage the system actually knows. “Received” means the request arrived; “accepted” means it was accepted for processing; “in progress” means work is underway; “completed” requires evidence of completion. Use “failed” only when failure is established. If a reply is missing and the result cannot yet be determined, say “unknown” rather than presenting failure as fact.
A 204 No Content response is stronger than 202 Accepted: it indicates that the server successfully fulfilled the request and has no additional response content to send. Still, the application must define whether the server’s success criterion matches the outcome the user cares about. A protocol response, an operation-status record, or a read of the resulting resource may each support different claims; decide which is authoritative for the task. RFC 9110, Section 15.3.5

Design a workflow that can recover from uncertainty
For consequential or asynchronous work, a useful design is to keep an operation identifier, record the attempt’s state, provide a status lookup, and reconcile the target’s authoritative state before retrying when the outcome is unknown. This is an implementation approach based on HTTP’s status-monitor guidance and retry rules, not a universal API contract.
- Return a distinct accepted or in-progress state when processing has not finished.
- Expose a way to check the operation’s current status when work continues asynchronously.
- Preserve an unknown outcome after a timeout or lost reply instead of converting it to failure.
- Before repeating an operation with an unknown result, establish whether the first attempt took effect or whether the operation is safe to repeat.
- Reserve completion messages for evidence that supports the completion claim.
RFC 9110 was published by the RFC Editor in June 2022. Its definitions establish what the HTTP responses mean; the choice of an application’s authoritative completion evidence depends on that application’s task and design. RFC 9110
