To replace a Samsung refrigerator water filter, first match the cartridge to your refrigerator’s exact model, then remove the old filter, lock in the new one, flush the water line, and reset the filter reminder. Filter location, cartridge fit, flush amount, and reset controls differ by model, so use the refrigerator’s manual for the exact instructions.
Identify the right replacement filter first
Find your refrigerator’s model number on its appliance label and enter it in Samsung’s Canada filter finder. You can also check the owner’s manual or read the code printed on the existing cartridge. Match the full filter code before ordering: a filter that looks similar may not fit your refrigerator.
Samsung Canada’s guide covers internal filters with the codes HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAF-CU1. Those codes do not cover every Samsung refrigerator or every market. Confirm compatibility for your exact model and region. Samsung recommends its genuine filters; that is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparison proving that every third-party filter will fail.

Replace the cartridge
- Check the manual. Find the filter location and model-specific removal and installation instructions. The compartment and filter mechanism vary.
- Relieve water pressure. If the model’s instructions call for it, shut off the water supply. Dispense water until the flow stops, and keep a towel nearby for drips.
- Remove the old filter. Open the filter cover, unlock the cartridge using its intended motion, and pull it out. Do not force a filter that will not release.
- Prepare the replacement. Remove its protective cap if present. Insert the cartridge in the direction specified for your refrigerator.
- Lock it into place. Turn or push the filter as the model requires until it locks. Check that its alignment mark, notch, or lock indicator matches the housing. If the cartridge does not fit readily, stop and recheck the model and filter code instead of forcing it.
Restore water, flush the line, and reset the reminder
Turn the water supply back on if you shut it off, then follow the refrigerator’s instructions to flush the new filter and discard the water. Samsung’s Canada guide specifies dispensing for about seven minutes, or 10–12 large glasses, for the procedures it describes. Samsung’s US guide says to flush several gallons. These are regional instructions, not a single universal quantity; follow the guidance for your model and market.

Reset the filter indicator using the control-panel or touchscreen instructions for your refrigerator. Samsung says the button or menu path varies by model, so do not assume a sequence from another refrigerator will apply. Afterward, check for leaks and confirm that water flows normally.
When should you replace the filter?
Samsung recommends changing the filter every six months and describes the indicator as a reminder. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independently verified lifespan study. Water quality and how often you use the dispenser can affect when replacement is needed, according to Samsung Canada’s guide.

Troubleshoot a filter that will not fit or leaks
- The cartridge will not lock: Recheck the refrigerator model and the cartridge code, confirm that any protective cap is removed, and verify the orientation and alignment marks. Do not force the cartridge.
- The filter leaks: Check that it is fully seated and locked, then verify that it is the correct filter for the model. Samsung warns that incompatible filters may leak or damage the refrigerator.
- Water flow is still slow: Confirm that the water supply is on and that the filter is installed correctly. Use the model-specific troubleshooting instructions if the problem continues.
- A HAF-CU1 filter does not fit after a design change: Samsung’s US support page describes a housing-lock procedure that may apply when changing from a two-rib to a three-rib design. Use it only if the refrigerator and filter match the procedure; otherwise, consult the manual or Samsung support.
