The Lockly Lyro Lasta is built for rental guest access, with fingerprint, keypad, app, physical-key and NFC/RFID-tag entry options. Its biggest trade-off is easy to miss: authentication releases the lock, but guests still turn the thumbturn themselves. In a hands-on review, CNET’s Tyler Lacoma tested the lock as if arriving at a vacation rental and found its access methods and TapCom guest communication worked in his tests, while the manual deadbolt operation caught him off guard.
What the vacation-rental test found
Lacoma’s review, published September 14, 2026, gave the Lockly Lyro Lasta an 8.0 score on the syndicated Tech Yahoo page. He tried different ways of entering as though he were a guest. In his tests on two phones, TapCom video calls, audio calls, unlock requests and geofencing worked. Those observations describe limited hands-on testing, not a long-term trial or a broader reliability guarantee. Read the syndicated review.
The main usability surprise is that the Lasta is not a motorized deadbolt. Lockly’s ManoTurn design releases the mechanism electronically, but the person at the door must rotate the thumbturn to move the bolt. That distinction matters for guests expecting the lock to turn itself after they enter a code or use the app.
How guests can unlock it—and what they still have to do
The Lasta supports several reported access methods: fingerprint, keypad code, phone or app, physical key, and NFC/RFID tags. Lockly specifies capacity for up to 200 access codes and 99 fingerprints. Those capacity figures are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified test results. Lockly’s Lasta product page.

- Authenticate: The guest uses an enabled method, such as a fingerprint, code, app or key.
- Turn the thumbturn: For electronic access, the mechanism releases, but the guest manually turns the thumbturn to retract or extend the deadbolt.
The handoff therefore involves more than sending a code: hosts should tell guests that they must turn the thumbturn, and should consider whether that extra action fits their guests and property. Lockly lists Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility, but compatibility alone does not change the manual operation of the bolt.
TapCom’s role in guest communication
The included TapCom Plate is intended to let guests interact with the host through a physical plate and their phone. Lockly’s separate TapCom page advertises app-less guest interaction and features such as video calls and remote access. The review’s favorable findings on calls, unlock requests and geofencing are specific to Lacoma’s tests on two phones; they do not establish how every phone, network or integration will perform.

TapCom service terms and compatibility can change. Lockly currently advertises up to six months of premium service for a compatible Lockly lock and up to three months for supported third-party locks, followed by paid plans. These are terms shown on the service page, not a promise that every integration or free-service offer will remain available. Check the current TapCom details before relying on a particular feature or service period.
Battery claims and what they mean for a rental
Lockly specifies eight AA alkaline batteries and estimates up to three years of battery life in Wi-Fi mode at an average of two unlocks per day. For an average of ten unlocks per day using keypad, fingerprint and app access, it estimates up to eleven months. Lockly cautions that actual performance varies. Lacoma said the multi-year figure still needed time to verify, so neither estimate should be treated as an independently confirmed lifespan.

The lock also has a Type-C backup power socket, according to Lockly’s specifications. That is a backup-power provision, not evidence that the batteries will last for a particular period in a busy rental.
Check your door before buying
Lockly lists an adjustable 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset, a 2⅛-inch bore and compatibility with doors 1⅜ to 3⅛ inches thick. A separate extension kit is specified for thicker doors. Confirm your measurements against the current installation requirements rather than assuming that a standard-looking door will fit.

Price and availability are not settled by the review
The September 2026 review displayed prices of $169 at Amazon and $170 at Lockly. Lockly’s product page in the current reference snapshot showed a $149.99 sale price while marking the lock sold out; its collection page showed $169.99. These conflicting listings do not establish a reliable current price or stock status. Check the seller’s live listing before making a purchase decision.

Who should consider the Lasta?
- It may suit hosts who value multiple guest-entry methods and want a built-in way to communicate with visitors through TapCom.
- It may frustrate guests who expect a smart lock to motorize the deadbolt; the Lasta requires a manual thumbturn.
- It needs a fit check against the property’s door dimensions, plus a review of current TapCom compatibility and service terms if those features are central to the setup.
The review’s 8.0 score and favorable account of the tested access features are useful context, but they do not answer questions about long-term battery life, independent security certification or performance across a wider range of properties. Those points are not established by the cited review and manufacturer specifications.
