To share an internet connection, first identify whether the source is a computer’s network connection or a phone’s cellular data. Then choose a sharing method both devices support: Wi-Fi is the usual hotspot option, while Bluetooth and USB tethering work on supported combinations. The steps differ by platform, and cellular sharing may use plan data or depend on carrier terms.

Choose the source and sharing method

A Windows PC or Mac can share an existing network connection. An iPhone Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular connection, not Wi-Fi it has joined. Most Android phones share mobile data. Before setup, check which methods the source and receiving device both support.

  • Wi-Fi: Creates a hotspot that the receiving device joins from its network settings.
  • Bluetooth: An alternative on supported device combinations.
  • USB: A wired option where both devices support tethering and the cable fits their ports. A cable is not needed for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

There is no established, comparable speed ranking across these platforms. Apple notes that turning on Maximize Compatibility for an iPhone hotspot may reduce performance for connected devices.

Share an internet connection from Windows

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Mobile hotspot. Windows can share a Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular connection over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If the source is cellular, hotspot use draws on that data plan.

  2. Under Share my internet connection from, choose the connection Windows should share.
  3. Under Share over, choose Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  4. To change the network name, password, or band, open Properties, then select Edit.
  5. Turn on Mobile hotspot.
  6. On the receiving device, open its Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings and connect using the details shown in Windows. Windows may also offer a QR code for joining.

In Windows 11, the Mobile hotspot control in Quick Settings is a shortcut to turn the feature on or off. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, and recommends moving to Windows 11; the hotspot instructions above apply to both versions, but Windows 10 no longer receives support.

Share a Mac’s connection with Internet Sharing

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
  2. Turn on Internet Sharing and select Configure.
  3. Choose the connection to share, then choose how other devices can access it.
  4. If Wi-Fi is the output, set the network name, password, and any available channel or security options.
  5. Connect the other device using the method and details you configured.

For Wi-Fi security, Apple recommends WPA3 Personal if every connected computer supports it. If some support only WPA2, Apple recommends WPA2/WPA3 Personal. Be cautious about configurations that share on the same port as the local network: Apple warns that some setups can disrupt network settings. If enabling sharing causes unexpected network problems, turn it off and check the source and output configuration, especially on a managed or shared network.

Turn on Personal Hotspot on iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join, if that option appears. Follow any setup prompt if Personal Hotspot is not configured.
  3. Review the Wi-Fi password on that screen. The hotspot’s network name is the iPhone’s device name.
  4. On the other device, open Wi-Fi settings, select the iPhone’s name, and enter the password. A Mac or Windows computer can also connect over Bluetooth or a compatible USB cable.

For USB tethering to Windows, Apple says Apple Devices or iTunes must be installed. iPhone Personal Hotspot shares cellular internet only; it cannot rebroadcast a Wi-Fi network the iPhone is using. Availability, fees, and the number of devices allowed can depend on the carrier and iPhone model. If Cellular Data is on but Personal Hotspot is not offered, ask the carrier whether the feature must be added to the plan.

Connect an Apple device using Instant Hotspot

For Instant Hotspot, Apple lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both devices and a distance of no more than 30 feet (10 meters). Signing in to the same Apple Account can make connecting faster. A VPN configuration that blocks local networking can interfere with Continuity features.

  2. Touch and hold Hotspot to configure the network name and password or choose Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB tethering.

Menu names and steps can vary by phone maker; Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later. Google says an Android Wi-Fi hotspot can share mobile data with up to 10 other devices. Carriers may limit tethering or charge extra. Google also says Mac computers cannot tether to Android by USB, so use another supported method, such as Wi-Fi, for an Android-to-Mac connection.

If the other device cannot connect

Windows hotspot is unavailable or the device cannot join

  • Confirm the source connection and sharing method under Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot.
  • Check the network name and password shown in Windows, or use its QR code if available.
  • Make sure the receiving device supports the selected sharing method.

Why can’t I see Personal Hotspot on iPhone?

  • Confirm Cellular Data is enabled, then check whether Personal Hotspot appears in Settings.
  • If it is still missing, ask the carrier whether hotspot access must be added to the plan.
  • For Instant Hotspot, check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both devices, that they are within 30 feet (10 meters), and that a VPN is not blocking local networking.
  • If compatibility mode is suggested, note that Apple says Maximize Compatibility may reduce performance for connected devices.

Android USB tethering does not work with a Mac

This combination is not supported according to Google. Use Wi-Fi or another method supported by both devices instead.
