LocalSend is a free, open-source way to send files between Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS devices on the same local network. It does not require an internet connection or cloud account, but “literally everything” goes too far: each device needs a supported operating system, the app, and network settings that allow devices to find one another. There is no verified evidence that LocalSend is generally faster than AirDrop; transfer speed depends on your network and devices.
What LocalSend does—and what it needs
LocalSend sends files over your local Wi-Fi network rather than routing them through a cloud service. The project says the data stays on the local network, so an internet connection is not required for the transfer itself. Both devices must have LocalSend installed and be able to communicate on the same local network. See the LocalSend site and FAQ and the project repository.
That makes it useful for sharing between operating systems that do not share one built-in file-transfer feature. It is not a universal receiver that works without an app, and network isolation or permissions can prevent devices from appearing.
Supported platforms and minimum versions
The project lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS versions. Its repository lists these minimums; because requirements can change with releases, check the current documentation before installing:
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
| Platform | Minimum listed by the project |

These details are from the LocalSend repository and are release-sensitive.
How to send a file with LocalSend
- Install LocalSend on both devices and connect them to the same local network.
- Open the app on both devices. On the sending device, choose the files you want to share.
- Select the recipient shown nearby in LocalSend.
- On the receiving device, accept the incoming transfer.
In the workflow described by the Ottawa PC Users’ Group review, files received on a Windows PC go to the Downloads folder unless the destination is changed in settings. LocalSend’s official site also identifies Downloads as the default save location. You can read the OPCUG review and check the official site.

- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
LocalSend versus AirDrop: what to expect
LocalSend’s main advantage is cross-platform reach: the project lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. AirDrop is part of Apple’s device ecosystem, while LocalSend requires the app on both sending and receiving devices. With LocalSend, both devices must also be reachable on the same local network; a cloud account is not required.
Recommended Free Tools
The reviewed sources do not provide controlled, comparable speed tests against AirDrop. LocalSend says speed depends on the Wi-Fi network, and its repository notes a known Android speed issue. Your results can vary with Wi-Fi quality, device capability, distance, and network configuration, so there is no sound basis here for calling it faster in general.

Privacy and security claims
The LocalSend project says transfers are encrypted using HTTPS and that users can enable PIN verification. Those are the project’s own descriptions, not findings from an independent security audit. The local-network design means the file payload need not pass through an internet cloud service, but it does not remove the need to protect your devices and network.
Fixes when a device does not appear
If the recipient list is empty or a transfer stalls, check the network path before reinstalling the app. The project’s repository identifies these common causes and remedies:

- Firewall rules: Allow LocalSend incoming and outgoing TCP/UDP traffic. The repository specifies incoming port 53317.
- Router access-point isolation: Disable AP isolation if enabled; it can block devices on Wi-Fi from communicating with one another.
- Windows network profile: When appropriate for a trusted home network, set Windows to a private network rather than a restrictive public profile.
- Apple local-network access: On macOS or iOS, make sure LocalSend has Local Network permission.
- Slow transfers: The project suggests trying 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Its repository also lists a known Android speed issue.
Exact firewall and permission labels can vary by operating-system version. Refer to the repository’s troubleshooting guidance for current details.
Where to get LocalSend and keep it updated
The repository recommends installing through an app store or package manager. It says the app does not auto-update, so using a distribution channel that delivers updates—or checking for updates yourself—matters when fixes and new versions are released. Available channels differ by platform; consult the project repository and official site.
