To find out what a DVD is worth, identify its exact release and compare it with recent completed sales of the same edition in similar condition. Age alone is not a reliable measure: common older releases may have little resale value, while some complete box sets or discontinued editions merit closer checking.

How to check a DVD’s value

  1. Identify the exact release. Record the title, format, edition or release, and whether you have a single disc or a set. Two releases of the same film or series are not necessarily comparable.
  2. Look up completed sales. Search for recent sold listings that match the release as closely as possible. eBay’s seller guidance recommends comparing similar completed listings and using an exact catalog match where available. A current asking price shows what a seller hopes to receive, not what a buyer has paid.
  3. Match condition and completeness. Compare disc and case condition, and check that a set includes all discs and any included materials. A complete set and a partial set are different items for valuation purposes.
  4. Assess how strong the evidence is. Use several close, recent sales where possible. If there are few comparable transactions, treat the result as an uncertain range rather than relying on one unusually high sale.
  5. Estimate your proceeds separately. A completed sale price is not the same as what you keep after marketplace fees, shipping, and other costs. Calculate those for the specific venue and transaction.

When listing a used DVD, eBay’s seller guide says: “As always, be clear about your item’s condition and add your own photo if you’re selling a used item.”

Which DVDs may deserve closer research?

Some categories are useful leads for checking exact releases and recent sales, but none guarantees a high price:

  • Complete television box sets
  • Out-of-print or discontinued releases
  • Collector editions
  • Some horror, cult, and anime titles

Flippr’s commercial sales analysis identifies these categories as potential areas of interest. The particular edition, present demand, availability, condition, and completeness still determine whether a specific copy has value.

What broad sales data can—and cannot—tell you

Flippr reported a median sale price of about $7.52 from 527,092 US eBay DVD and Blu-ray sales in the 90 days through July 2, 2026. In that same combined-format dataset, 30.9% of sales were at least $10 and 8.5% were at least $20. These are vendor-published figures for a defined sample, not an official DVD-wide valuation or an estimate for any individual disc.

In a separate August 3, 2026 analysis, Flippr examined 583,559 US eBay DVD and Blu-ray sold listings from May 1 through August 3, 2026. It reported that almost 70% sold for less than $10 and 4.9% sold for more than $25. This is also a combined-format vendor dataset, not an independent census.

Flippr also reported Amazon used buy-box averages of $45.60 for box sets and $11.57 for other items, using its Keepa data. Its reported shares priced above $25 were 55.3% for box sets and 6.5% for singles. These are buy-box price figures, not completed-sale values, so they should not be treated as evidence that a seller will receive those amounts.

Other ways to look up a price

ValueYourMusic offers a DVD guide based on auction sales history. It can provide another reference point, but a guide estimate is not a guaranteed appraisal. For a specific DVD, recent completed sales of the closest matching release remain the more direct comparison.
