The best TV headphones depend on how your television sends audio. For a dedicated, low-delay setup with optical or analog input, the Sennheiser RS 195 RF is a strong starting point: RTINGS named it its best wireless TV headphone in September 2026. For a TV that supports headphone pairing, Bluetooth headphones can be simpler and more versatile. These picks serve different needs; they are not the results of one controlled five-model comparison.
Five TV headphone picks for different needs
Prices and availability change, and TV compatibility varies by model. Check the exact product version and your television’s outputs before buying.
1. Best dedicated system: Sennheiser RS 195 RF
The RS 195 RF uses a transmitter dock with optical and analog 3.5 mm inputs. RTINGS’ September 2026 guide named it its best wireless TV headphone, citing low-latency operation and personalized sound profiles. Those profiles are intended to adjust listening for mild to moderate hearing loss, but they are not a substitute for hearing aids. Sennheiser states that the technology does not function like a hearing aid and is not a medical product. RTINGS’ guide and Sennheiser’s RS 195 product information describe the recommendation and features.
There are practical compromises. RTINGS reports around 19 hours of continuous playback and more than eight hours to recharge; Crutchfield lists up to 18 hours of battery life. These are each source’s published figures, not a combined or independently verified estimate. RTINGS also notes that fit can affect bass and that some listeners may find the pressure uncomfortable.
#1 Best Overall
- Wireless headphones designed for clear TV conversations: Seniors and the hearing impaired can hear every word without raising the volume. Audio enthusiasts get cinema-grade sound. Late-night viewers won't disturb anyone's rest.
- Ultra-low latency & long-range transmission: Experience less than 40ms latency for perfectly synced audio and video—ideal for live sports, so you catch every comment, cheer, and exciting moment. With a stable 100ft (30m) range, move freely between rooms without signal drop for a truly immersive experience.
- Use as standard Bluetooth headphones: When you're not watching TV, simply pair them with your phone or computer for wireless listening. A single charge delivers up to 45 hours of use. Low on battery? Just place them back on the charging dock for a quick recharge.
- Multiple connection options: Simply plug in the included optical, AUX, or RCA cable and power on—no complex setup required. If your TV doesn't have these ports, you can also connect the headphones via Bluetooth (TV must support Bluetooth). Easy, flexible, and hassle-free.
- Lightweight and comfortable: Crafted from lightweight materials with soft, breathable earcups, these TV headphones reduce fatigue even during extended use. They make a thoughtful gift for parents or seniors, helping them enjoy TV time in greater comfort and clarity.
2. Dedicated alternative: Sennheiser RS 175 RF
The RS 175 RF is worth considering if you want a dock-based connection but do not need the RS 195’s hearing profiles. RTINGS describes similar performance at a lower cost, with bass boost and virtual surround instead. Its trade-offs include long recharging time and fit-sensitive sound. Compare current regional versions and availability rather than assuming that names or listings are identical everywhere. RTINGS’ TV headphone guide covers the comparison.
3. Budget dedicated option: a currently available transmitter-dock model
For a lower-cost dedicated setup, look for a complete headphone-and-transmitter system whose inputs match your TV. RTINGS’ current guide lists Insignia Digital Wireless Headphones among its picks. It also reports that the Avantree HT5009 became difficult to find in stock in June 2026, so an older recommendation may no longer be a practical purchase. Confirm that the exact model is available and accepts your television’s audio output before ordering. RTINGS’ guide explains its current picks.

4. Bluetooth convenience pick: Sony WH-CH720N, if your TV supports pairing
TechRadar’s September 2026 guide recommends the Sony WH-CH720N as a budget option and lists Bluetooth 5.2 and a 3.5 mm jack. It is a general-purpose headphone, not a TV dock system. Before choosing it, verify that your TV can pair directly with Bluetooth headphones and consider whether audio delay is acceptable for your setup. The headphone’s Bluetooth version alone does not guarantee a particular latency with a given television. TechRadar’s guide supports the recommendation.

Sennheiser’s RS 275 family is a newer option for people considering a shared-audio ecosystem. Sonova Consumer Hearing’s 2026 announcement describes the RS 275 bundle and RS 255 variant. An RS 275 preorder announcement gave a UK MSRP of £219.99; that is historical launch information, not a current price or a US price. Auracast requires compatible support across the TV transmitter, headphones, and any receiving devices. Do not assume that an ordinary Bluetooth TV or headphone supports it. See the 2026 RS 275 announcement and Sennheiser’s headphone collection for product-family information.

Choose by connection, not just by headphone rating
| Setup type | What it suits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated transmitter dock | TV-focused listening, especially when low audio delay and a direct optical or analog connection matter. | The dock must accept an output your TV provides. For the RS 195 optical input, use PCM or stereo; surround formats are not supported. |
| Direct Bluetooth headphones | A simple pairing setup and headphones that can also be used with other devices. | Your exact TV model must support Bluetooth headphone pairing. Availability and menu names vary; some Roku TVs may not support direct Bluetooth headphone connection. |
| Separate TV Bluetooth transmitter | A possible workaround when the TV lacks suitable built-in headphone pairing. | Match the transmitter’s input to the TV’s output and check its supported audio format and latency behavior. |
| Auracast system | A compatible shared-audio ecosystem for multiple receiving devices. | Confirm Auracast support across the transmitter, headphones, and every device intended to receive audio. |
A dedicated TV system’s own link is designed to reduce picture-and-speech mismatch. Bluetooth delay depends on both ends of the connection and their supported codecs, so no pairing can be promised to have zero delay. Crutchfield’s TV headphone connection guide discusses connection considerations.
Check your TV before buying
- Find the exact TV model. Check its manual or settings, then locate the ports labeled AUDIO OUT or DIGITAL OUT. Look for optical audio or analog 3.5 mm output, and check whether its menus offer direct Bluetooth headphone pairing.
- Match the headphone system to an output. A dock does not solve a connection mismatch unless it accepts the signal your TV can send. If neither the TV nor the headphones share a suitable connection, a separate transmitter or decoder may be needed.
- Set digital audio to PCM or stereo when required. Sennheiser says the RS 195 optical input supports PCM or stereo, not surround formats. If using that optical connection, change the TV or connected device’s digital output setting as needed. Sennheiser’s RS 195 product FAQ documents this limitation.
- Confirm Bluetooth support in the TV manual or menu. Interface labels differ among manufacturers and models, and some Roku TVs may lack direct Bluetooth headphone support. Avantree’s setup guide gives examples for Samsung, LG, Roku, Hisense, Fire TV, Sony, TCL, Vizio, and Philips TVs.
- If adding an optical adapter, match the signal conversion correctly. A digital-to-analog decoder and a DAC are not automatically interchangeable; choose a device that explicitly supports the source format and the headphones’ required input. Sennheiser support’s optical-source guidance distinguishes these connection needs.
Account for comfort, hearing preferences, and shared use
Fit can matter as much as a feature list during a long film. Consider whether an over-ear design feels comfortable with glasses, whether the clamping force is tolerable, and how weight and headband pressure feel over extended sessions. RTINGS reports that the RS 195’s fit can affect bass and may cause soreness for some listeners. If possible, check the return policy before committing to a fit-sensitive model. RTINGS’ review guide describes these fit considerations.

The RS 195’s sound profiles are an adjustment feature for listening preferences, not a medical treatment. For two-listener use, Sennheiser says two headphone pairs can connect to one RS 195 transmitter simultaneously, but personal hearing enhancement is unavailable in that two-pair mode. Sennheiser’s product FAQ details the distinction and shared-listening limitation.

The list combines different kinds of evidence and different product roles. RTINGS supplies the dedicated-system ranking and reports that its broader testing covers over 910 pairs of headphones; that is its overall headphone testing count, not the number of TV headphones tested. TechRadar supports the Bluetooth convenience pick, while manufacturer pages establish product features and availability. Rankings and stock can change: RTINGS says its recommendations consider price, visitor feedback, and availability, and records that its budget recommendation changed after the Avantree HT5009 became hard to find in June 2026.
