To get a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet out of Safe Mode, open the power menu and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, turn the device off completely, then turn it back on. On some software versions, you can instead tap the Safe mode notification and choose Turn off.
Restart your Galaxy device
- Open the power menu. The button combination or menu access varies by model; use the method for your device if it has no dedicated Power button.
- Tap Restart and wait for the device to start again. Safe Mode should be off.
If you do not see Restart, choose Power off. After the screen goes dark, turn the phone or tablet back on. Samsung documents both restarting and fully powering off and on as ways to exit Safe Mode. See Samsung Australia’s Safe Mode exit instructions and Samsung US troubleshooting guidance.
Use the Safe Mode notification if it appears
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open notifications.
- Tap the Safe mode notification.
- Choose Turn off if that option is shown. The device will restart.
This shortcut is available only on supported devices and software versions, and the wording or controls may differ. If there is no Safe Mode notification or no Turn off option, use the power-menu restart instead. Samsung describes the notification method in its Galaxy Safe Mode instructions and Safe Mode guide.
What Safe Mode does
Safe Mode starts the device with core software while disabling downloaded apps. It helps you check whether an issue is related to an app you installed. If the original problem stops happening in Safe Mode, a downloaded app may be involved; Safe Mode itself is not a fix for that underlying issue. Samsung explains the diagnostic use of Safe Mode in its Galaxy troubleshooting guidance.

If the phone keeps starting in Safe Mode
Check the Volume Down button
Look for a Volume Down button that is being pressed by a case or accessory, or that feels stuck. A pressed or faulty button can cause Safe Mode to start again. Remove the case temporarily and check whether the button moves and releases normally.
Remove recent apps if the problem disappears in Safe Mode
If the issue that prompted you to use Safe Mode is absent there, uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time. After each removal, restart normally and check whether the issue returns. This helps identify a possible app cause without removing every app at once.

Ask Samsung to assess a persistent button problem
If Safe Mode keeps returning after a normal restart and the Volume Down button appears stuck or damaged, Samsung Australia recommends having the device assessed. Contact Samsung support or an authorised service provider in your region; repair options depend on the device and location. See Samsung Australia’s guidance on persistent Safe Mode startup.
Why the steps may look different
Galaxy models and software versions do not all use the same physical keys or menu labels. Some devices use Side and Volume Down buttons to open power controls, while others have a dedicated Power button. Follow the power-menu method for your model rather than assuming one button combination applies to every Galaxy device. Samsung’s power on/off instructions and restart options describe these variations.
