Start with the settings that solve your biggest frustration: notifications and Focus for fewer interruptions, privacy permissions for more control over app access, accessibility options for a clearer interface, or battery settings for different charging and power needs. The best setup is personal, and some options depend on your iPhone model and iOS version.

If a menu path below does not match your phone, open Settings, tap the search field, and search for the setting by name. Apple’s menu labels and feature availability can vary by version and model.

Which iPhone settings should you change first?

Pick the settings that address a specific annoyance rather than changing everything at once. For fewer interruptions, start with notifications and Focus. For a more private Lock Screen, review what is visible while the phone is locked. For readability, try text size or Display Zoom. Battery settings can help conserve power, but may change performance or charging behavior.

How do you stop unnecessary iPhone notifications?

Apple’s iPhone User Guide says you can customize notification settings “so you see only what’s important to you.” Use the options below to decide what deserves an immediate alert and what can wait.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

1. Choose app notifications individually

Go to Settings > Notifications, select an app, and adjust whether it can send notifications and how they appear. Turn off alerts for apps that do not need to interrupt you, but check that calls, messages, security alerts, and other important notifications remain enabled.

2. Batch less urgent alerts with Scheduled Summary

In Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, choose the apps to include and set delivery times. This is useful for updates that do not need to arrive immediately. Keep time-sensitive apps out of the summary if a delay would matter.

3. Choose a Lock Screen notification layout

In Settings > Notifications, choose how notifications appear on the Lock Screen: as a List, a Stack, or a Count. A list shows alerts individually, a stack groups them, and a count reduces the display to a number. Pick the view that is easiest for you to scan.

4. Set up Focus for a recurring context

Go to Settings > Focus and configure a Focus such as Work or Sleep, or create one for another activity. Choose which people and apps are allowed to notify you while it is active. A restrictive setup reduces interruptions; an overly restrictive one can hide something you wanted to see.

5. Schedule Focus to turn on automatically

Open a Focus under Settings > Focus and add an activation schedule based on a time, location, or app, where those options are available. If the Focus turns on at an unwanted moment, review or remove its schedule.

6. Link Focus to a Lock Screen or Home Screen

In the settings for a Focus, link it to a Lock Screen or Home Screen where the option is available. A calmer Lock Screen or a work-specific Home Screen can make the active context more obvious and keep distracting app pages out of view.

Which privacy and access settings are worth reviewing?

7. Review app permissions

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security and review the relevant data or feature categories, such as the camera, microphone, contacts, or photos. Check which apps have access and revoke permissions that are no longer needed. An app may lose a feature that depends on the permission you remove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Review Location Services app by app

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select an app, and choose whether it can use your location. Limiting access can improve privacy, but may affect features that rely on location, such as nearby results or location-based directions.

9. Limit tracking requests

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking to manage whether apps can ask to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites. This controls tracking requests; it is not a promise that every form of tracking is prevented.

10. Require attention for Face ID

For Face ID, look under Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention for Require Attention for Face ID. Apple says this adds a level of security by requiring you to look at the screen when Face ID verifies you. The setting is specific to Face ID-equipped models.

11. Review what is accessible while your iPhone is locked

Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, and review the access options under Allow Access When Locked. Consider whether items such as notification views should remain available from the Lock Screen. Limiting access can add privacy, while making some actions less convenient.

How do you make the iPhone interface easier to use?

12. Increase text size

Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size for a general text-size adjustment. For larger options, look under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and enable Larger Accessibility Sizes. Larger text can make some screens show less content at once.

13. Turn on Bold Text

Open Settings > Display & Brightness and turn on Bold Text. Heavier lettering can be easier to distinguish, though it changes the appearance of text throughout the interface.

14. Adjust Display Zoom

Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom and choose an available view. Display Zoom enlarges interface elements as well as text, which can make controls easier to see but leaves less room for content on screen.

15. Show borders around controls

In Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, turn on Show Borders if available. It can make controls easier to distinguish from surrounding content; turn it off if the added outlines make the interface feel cluttered.

  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.

16. Adjust appearance and brightness

Use Settings > Display & Brightness to adjust screen brightness, choose Light or Dark appearance, and configure options such as Night Shift and Auto-Lock. These are preference choices: select the brightness and appearance that work for your surroundings and viewing habits. Do not treat them as a guaranteed health benefit.

17. Choose an Auto-Lock interval

In Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, select how long the iPhone waits before locking the screen. A longer interval can help while reading or following directions without touching the display, but Apple cautions that delaying Auto-Lock can increase power consumption.

Which sound and attention settings can you personalize?

18. Set tones by alert type or contact

Use Settings > Sounds & Haptics to choose sounds and vibration patterns for alert types such as calls, messages, and calendar alerts. To personalize calls or messages from a person, open that contact in Contacts, tap Edit, and choose a ringtone or text tone where available.

19. Separate alert volume from ringtone volume

In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, review the ringtone and alert volume controls and the Change with Buttons option. If you want the volume buttons to change media volume without also changing ringtone and alert volume, turn off Change with Buttons. Available labels and behavior can vary by iOS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

20. Review Attention Aware Features

On supported Face ID models, look under Settings > Face ID & Passcode for Attention Aware Features. These features can dim the display, expand some notifications when you look at the phone, and lower the volume of certain alerts. Turn them off if those behaviors do not suit you.

Which iPhone settings help the battery last?

21. Use Low Power Mode when you need to conserve power

Turn on Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode when you want to reduce power use. It can change background activity and display behavior, so it is a tradeoff rather than a no-cost setting. Turn it off when you prefer the usual behavior.

22. Consider Adaptive Power only if your model supports it

If Adaptive Power appears under Settings > Battery > Power Mode, you can consider enabling it to let the iPhone adjust behavior based on usage. Availability depends on the model and software version; do not assume every iPhone has this control.

23. Set a Charge Limit if supported

On iPhone 15 and later, Settings > Battery > Charging includes a Charge Limit. Choose a maximum such as 80% if it suits a routine that involves frequent or prolonged charging. Apple says setting a limit can help reduce battery wear in those situations, but it also means the phone may not charge fully before you unplug it.

24. Review charging optimizations for your model

Apple’s charging guidance uses different menu paths by generation: on iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Charging; on iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Review the charging optimization options available on your phone and choose the one that fits your routine. These features are intended to manage charging, not guarantee a particular battery lifespan.

How should you choose among the settings?

  • Fewer interruptions: adjust app notifications, use Scheduled Summary for nonurgent alerts, and create a Focus with a suitable schedule.
  • More privacy: review app access and location permission, and decide what can appear while the phone is locked. Denying access can limit app features that depend on it.
  • A clearer interface: try larger text, Bold Text, Display Zoom, or Show Borders; each affects screen appearance or the amount of content visible.
  • More time before the screen locks: increase Auto-Lock if useful, while accounting for its potential power cost.
  • Battery conservation: use Low Power Mode when its behavior changes are acceptable, and review model-specific charging options rather than assuming one setting fits every iPhone.
