Samsung Auto Blocker does more than stop apps from being installed outside official stores. On compatible Galaxy devices, its standard setting also blocks certain USB commands and unofficial software installs, and can block suspicious images in messaging apps. An optional setting called Maximum restrictions adds controls for work profiles, 2G, Wi-Fi reconnection, message previews, shared albums, and photo location data.
For most people who install apps only from trusted sources, Samsung says standard Auto Blocker is sufficient. Maximum restrictions is for people willing to trade some convenience for tighter limits.
What does Samsung Auto Blocker do?
Auto Blocker is a built-in security setting for Galaxy devices running One UI 6 or later, according to Samsung. Its exact availability and menu labels vary by model, software, market, and carrier. Samsung’s baseline protections focus on blocking specific installation routes and content—not on guaranteeing that a device is free of malware.

What does Maximum restrictions add?
Maximum restrictions is an optional, stronger configuration—not simply a stricter app-install check. Samsung documents these additional controls; the available bundle can depend on the device’s software version.
- Enables app protection.
- Blocks device-administrator apps and work profiles.
- Blocks 2G connections.
- Stops automatic reconnection to non-secure Wi-Fi networks.
- Blocks message link previews and preview images.
- Prevents creating or joining Gallery shared albums.
- Removes location information from pictures before they are shared.
Samsung support describes Maximum restrictions this way: “Maximum restrictions is intended for users who prefer stronger security, even if it means giving up some convenience.” See Samsung Canada’s feature and limitations guidance and Samsung US setup and restrictions guidance.

Should you turn on Auto Blocker?
If you generally install apps only from trusted sources, Samsung says standard Auto Blocker is sufficient for most users. It adds specific barriers while leaving Maximum restrictions’ extra limits off.
Recommended Free Tools
Consider Maximum restrictions if you want those added controls and can accept their effects. In particular, it may prevent work or enterprise apps that require administrator privileges or a work profile from activating. If your area has no newer mobile network available, blocking 2G can also leave you without calls, texts, or mobile data. Message previews, shared albums, photo location details, and some connections or accessories may be affected as well.

Which Galaxy versions have each feature?
Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing says Auto Blocker is available on Galaxy devices with One UI 6 or higher. Maximum restrictions is listed from One UI 6.1.1, while the additional 2G and non-secure Wi-Fi reconnection controls are listed from One UI 7. The listing displays version 1.3.10.7 and a date of January 20, 2026. These milestones do not guarantee identical menus or options on every device; check the Auto Blocker screen on your own phone.
Defaults can differ, too. Samsung says Galaxy devices released with One UI 6.1.1 have Auto Blocker on by default, while devices upgraded from an earlier One UI version retain their previous setting. That is a model- and release-specific detail, not a universal default. Samsung’s support pages note that availability and screens can vary by device, software, carrier, and country.

What about third-party Android app stores?
On February 27, 2026, Samsung announced an intended change for 2026 that would let users directly install qualifying third-party Android app stores and their apps, subject to security and compliance requirements. The announcement did not identify eligible stores or give a precise rollout date, so it establishes a plan rather than confirming that the change is available on a particular phone today. Check Samsung’s developer announcement for the stated scope.
What Auto Blocker does not establish about Message Guard
Samsung’s October 31, 2023 announcement described Message Guard as mitigating “Zero Click attacks” involving direct image messages that conceal malicious code. At that time, Samsung said protection initially applied to Google and Samsung messaging apps and had expanded to Messenger, Telegram, KakaoTalk, and WhatsApp. That is a dated list, not confirmation of current compatibility across those apps or all regions. Samsung’s launch announcement also quoted an executive describing the feature’s design intent; that statement is not independent evidence of effectiveness.
