The most useful laptop accessories depend on where and how you use your computer. A desk setup may benefit from a stand, keyboard, monitor, or dock; frequent travelers may get more value from a charger and a well-fitting sleeve or bag. Treat this list as a menu, not a shopping checklist, and confirm compatibility with your specific laptop before buying.
Which laptop accessories are worth buying?
Start with the problem you want to solve: more comfortable input at a desk, more screen space, extra connections, easier travel, or better audio and video for calls. Lenovo likewise notes that accessory choices depend on the laptop and its intended use. The options below address different needs; not every setup needs all of them.
1. Laptop stand
A stand is useful at a fixed desk when you want to position the laptop display separately from your hands. If you raise the laptop, consider using an external keyboard and mouse so you can place your input devices where they work for you. Home-work accessory guidance from Samsung and Tom’s Guide includes stands as an option; that does not establish a medical benefit.
2. External keyboard
An external keyboard can be convenient for desk typing, especially when the laptop is on a stand. Choose a layout and size that suit your work, then check the connection method and compatibility with your operating system. HP’s student accessory guide and Samsung’s guide both include external keyboards among possible additions: HP and Samsung.

3. Wireless mouse
A mouse is optional, but it can be a useful alternative to the trackpad for frequent laptop use. A Bluetooth mouse avoids occupying a USB port, provided your laptop supports Bluetooth. A receiver-based mouse uses a USB port and may need an adapter or hub if the laptop lacks the right connection. Samsung specifically advises checking Bluetooth support and connection needs in its laptop accessory guidance.
4. External monitor
A monitor adds screen area to a fixed desk setup. Before choosing one, check the laptop’s video-output options, the monitor’s inputs, and the cable or adapter needed to connect them. HDMI, USB-C, and DisplayPort are common routes, but your laptop must support the relevant output. Samsung discusses these connection options in its monitor guidance. Portable monitors are another category to consider if you need extra screen space away from a permanent desk, but portability brings its own size and weight trade-offs.
How should you choose between a hub, dock, and adapter?
These accessories expand connectivity, but they suit different setups. A hub is generally the portable choice for a few devices; a dock is more appropriate when several peripherals stay connected at a desk. An adapter addresses a specific connection mismatch. The right choice depends on your laptop’s ports and supported capabilities, the devices you plan to connect, display requirements, and whether you need power pass-through.

| Option | Best fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C hub | Portable expansion for a few devices | Required port types, display output and resolution, and whether pass-through charging meets your needs |
| Docking station | A desk setup with multiple peripherals that can remain connected | Whether the laptop supports the dock’s USB-C or Thunderbolt features, plus monitor connections and power needs |
| Adapter | A specific connection need, such as converting between available ports and a device cable | That it supports the required connection and any display or charging capability you need |
Belkin’s USB-C hubs, docks, and adapters guide recommends listing the devices you intend to connect, checking power needs, and verifying display resolution, connectors, and laptop port capabilities. HP also advises checking USB-C or Thunderbolt support when selecting a dock in its docking station guide. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not establish that every display, data, or charging feature is supported.
5. USB-C hub
Choose a hub by the connections you actually need rather than by the number of ports on the box. Count your devices, then confirm the hub provides the right port types and supports any display output or charging pass-through you plan to use. Check the laptop’s own USB-C capabilities as well.
6. Docking station
A dock can make sense when you regularly connect several desk peripherals and want to leave them attached between sessions. Match it to the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt support, the number and type of monitors, and the power the laptop requires. HP’s dock selection guide explains the decision in terms of a stationary setup and device compatibility.

What should you add for travel and storage?
For a laptop that leaves home, prioritize fit and the amount of gear you carry. A sleeve adds a compact carrying layer; a bag or backpack can hold the laptop alongside accessories. External storage is a separate choice for files, not a substitute for the laptop’s internal memory.

A spare charger can be useful if you travel or want one available at another location. Confirm the laptop’s supported charging standard, required wattage, connector, and cable before buying. A charger that works for one laptop is not automatically suitable for another; Samsung’s accessory guide and Tom’s Guide’s accessory roundup offer examples, not universal compatibility rules.
8. Laptop sleeve
A sleeve is a compact option for carrying a laptop inside another bag. Check the laptop’s dimensions against the sleeve’s interior measurements, and look at the padding and closure. A sleeve is a carrying layer, not a guarantee against every impact. Samsung and Lenovo both cover sleeves or cases in their accessory guidance: Samsung and Lenovo.

9. Laptop backpack or carry bag
A dedicated bag is useful when you carry the laptop along with a charger, peripherals, or other belongings. Check the laptop compartment’s dimensions rather than relying only on a stated screen size, and choose a bag with enough room for the load you actually carry. HP’s student accessory guide and Lenovo’s accessories FAQ include carrying options.
10. Portable SSD
A portable solid-state drive provides external storage you can carry between devices. Compare capacity, connector, and transfer needs, and decide how it fits into your backup routine. It stores files externally; it does not upgrade the laptop’s internal memory. Samsung distinguishes portable SSD storage from laptop memory in its accessory guide.

Camera, audio, and pen accessories are most useful when the laptop’s built-in options do not meet your needs or the laptop explicitly supports the add-on. Check operating-system compatibility and connection type as well as the feature you care about.

11. External webcam
Consider a webcam if the built-in camera is inadequate or your laptop has none. Compare resolution, autofocus, mounting options, operating-system support, and whether you need the webcam’s microphone. HP discusses webcams for virtual classes in its student accessories guide; Lenovo also covers webcams in its accessories FAQ.
12. Headset or earbuds with a microphone
A headset or microphone-equipped earbuds can be useful for calls, classes, or listening in shared spaces. Choose based on comfort, microphone needs, connection type, and whether over-ear headphones or compact earbuds fit your setting. HP and Lenovo both include audio accessories in their guides: HP and Lenovo.
13. Mousepad
A mousepad is an optional addition if your desk surface does not track reliably or you prefer a consistent surface. It is not essential for every mouse or workspace; HP lists it as one possible student accessory in its guide.
14. Compatible stylus
A stylus is worth considering only if your laptop supports touchscreen pen input. Compatibility is model-specific: Samsung describes an S Pen Pro for compatible 2-in-1 Galaxy laptops, not as a universal laptop accessory. Check your laptop maker’s supported pen models before buying, as explained in Samsung’s accessory guide.
How to narrow your wishlist
- For a fixed desk: consider a stand, keyboard, mouse, monitor, or dock according to the way you work and the connections your laptop supports.
- For travel: prioritize a compatible charger and a sleeve or bag that fits your laptop and the gear you carry.
- For more storage: consider a portable SSD, and plan how it will fit into your backups.
- For calls or classes: consider an external webcam or microphone-equipped headset if the built-in camera or audio does not suit your needs.
- For drawing or handwriting: verify touchscreen pen support and the specific compatible stylus before purchase.
Manufacturer guides from Samsung, Lenovo, Belkin, and HP provide selection guidance; Tom’s Guide published a product roundup on August 16, 2026. These sources do not establish independent testing of the accessories discussed here.
