An “ARRIS box” could be a cable TV set-top box, a media gateway that combines TV and networking, or a cable modem/router gateway. The model number—not the brand name alone—identifies what yours does. Check the label on the underside or rear, and note whether coax, Ethernet, or TV cables are connected before following setup or troubleshooting steps.
How to identify your ARRIS box
- Find the model number. Look for a label on the underside or rear of the device. Record the complete model name or number.
- Note the connected cables. A coax cable may carry cable service, but the device’s role depends on the model and service. Also note whether it connects to a television, router, or other network equipment.
- Match the model to its documentation. Provider support pages may separate TV equipment from internet equipment. For example, Xfinity’s manuals and safety sheets page organizes resources by equipment type. ARRIS likewise distinguishes set-top boxes and IP clients from media gateways in its Whole Home Solution document.
What an ARRIS box may do
ARRIS makes several kinds of equipment, so the word “box” does not tell you whether yours handles television, internet, or both.
| Device type | Main job | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| TV set-top box | Receives a provider’s television service and sends it to a TV. | Provider, supported TV service, available outputs, remote, and any listed recording features. |
| Media gateway | Combines television and networking functions in one device. | Video service, modem standard, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, MoCA, and any listed storage. |
| Internet gateway | Connects cable internet and shares it with household devices. | Provider approval, DOCSIS standard, Wi-Fi features, Ethernet ports, and voice support if needed. |
TV set-top box
A set-top box receives a television provider’s service and outputs it to a television. Available features depend on the exact model and provider. A set-top box is not automatically an internet modem or router; consult the model documentation to confirm its functions.
Media gateway
Some models combine video service with networking. For example, the ARRIS DCX3635 datasheet describes QAM and IP video delivery, an integrated cable modem, optional wireless routing, MoCA, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. It lists 500 GB and 1 TB internal hard-drive configurations for that model. Those specifications should not be assumed for other ARRIS boxes. See the DCX3635 datasheet.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi‑Gig speed for today & tomorrow: DOCSIS 3.1 performance supports cable internet plans up to 2 Gbps, delivering ultra‑fast streaming, gaming, and downloads.
- Save on rental fees: Own your modem and avoid monthly equipment charges—check with your cable provider for plan compatibility.
- Compact, modern design: Space‑saving footprint with discrete LED indicators for power, upstream/downstream, and online status.
- Easy setup: Connect cable, power on, and activate with your cable provider. Then connect a Wi‑Fi router to the Ethernet port for home Wi-Fi coverage.
- Modem only: This cable modem requires a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system for home Wi-Fi network.
Internet gateway
A cable internet gateway combines a modem and router. The ARRIS SURFboard SBG8300 guide describes a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, wireless access point, and four-port Ethernet router; compatible devices can connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A different model, the SBG6700-AC, is a DOCSIS 3.0 gateway, illustrating why the model number matters. See the SBG8300 guide and SBG6700-AC guide.
Is an ARRIS box a modem or a cable box?
It may be either, or—in the case of some media gateways—both. A TV set-top box is for provider television service. An internet gateway connects cable internet and distributes it over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A media gateway may combine TV and networking functions. Confirm the model rather than inferring its job from its appearance, brand, or coax connection.

- Two 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports
What to verify before replacing an internet gateway
ARRIS branding alone does not establish that a gateway will work with your internet service. Before replacing one, check the provider’s equipment-compatibility information for the exact model and confirm it fits your service requirements. Provider and manufacturer materials are organized by equipment type and model; the SBG8300 guide, for instance, documents that specific device but is not a universal compatibility list.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the full model number.
- Check that your provider approves the model for your service.
- Compare the model’s documented DOCSIS standard and connection features with your needs.
- Follow the provider’s activation instructions for the replacement device.
Setup and troubleshooting without guessing
There is no single setup, button sequence, or reset procedure that applies to every ARRIS product. Use the instructions for the exact model and the type of service it provides.

- Harness the power of DOCSIS 3.0 technology to bond up to 16 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels. The ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 enhances your personal media experience, at fast broadband speed.
- Get speeds up to 686 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload (speeds based on your Cable Internet service provider). Compatible with most U.S. cable providers.
- Features DOCSIS 3.0 technology to bond up to 16 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels.
- Supports IPv4 and IPv6 Internet standard.
- Requires Cable Internet Service. If you are unsure of your service, please contact your CABLE provider to confirm.
- Photograph or write down the model number on the device label.
- Identify whether the device serves television, internet, or both, using its connected cables and model documentation.
- Open the matching ARRIS or provider manual. For Xfinity equipment, the manuals page separates internet equipment from TV resources.
- Follow that manual’s setup and troubleshooting steps. Do not factory-reset the device as an initial step unless the correct instructions call for it; a reset can erase personalized configuration.
Can you open or repair an ARRIS box?
Do not open a device to attempt an internal repair. ARRIS’s Whole Home Solution document states, “This equipment contains no user-serviceable parts,” and warns against servicing covered equipment yourself. For a fault, use the appropriate provider support channel or the instructions for the exact model.
