Before installing macOS 27, verify that Apple lists your exact Mac model as compatible, check the internal storage and respond to any warning from Software Update, then make and verify a separate Time Machine backup. Apple’s reviewed pages do not specify a minimum amount of free space for installation, so there is no verified universal number to target.

Is my Mac compatible with macOS 27?

Check Apple’s macOS 27 compatibility list and match your Mac’s family and model exactly. Do not assume that every Mac in a product family qualifies: eligibility is model-specific. Apple’s upgrade instructions also say Software Update offers only software compatible with your Mac. If your model is not listed, do not assume it can run macOS 27; Apple notes that an earlier macOS may be available.

How much space do I need to install macOS 27?

Apple’s reviewed macOS 27 upgrade and storage guidance does not state a minimum free-space requirement. Avoid treating generic online figures as an Apple requirement. Check the storage view below, then follow any insufficient-space message Software Update displays for your Mac.

Check internal storage

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage > All Volumes.
  2. Move the pointer over a category color to see how much space it uses. Light gray indicates available space.

The categories help identify where storage is being used; the display does not establish how much room macOS 27 will require.

  • Use Apple’s built-in storage optimization and iCloud storage guidance linked from its storage support page if those options fit your needs.
  • Do not delete system or library files to make room.

How do I back up my Mac before upgrading?

Apple recommends backing up before a macOS upgrade. A Time Machine backup on a separate destination gives you a recovery copy if something happens to the Mac’s internal storage. Local APFS snapshots are stored on that same internal disk, so they are not a substitute for a separate backup.

Choose a Time Machine destination

You can use compatible external storage connected through a port such as USB-C or Thunderbolt, another Mac on the network, or a supported network-attached storage (NAS) device. Check that the destination works with your Mac and has enough capacity. Apple recommends a Time Machine disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity; its example is a 2 TB backup disk for a Mac with 1 TB of storage. Apple recommends reserving the Time Machine disk for backups rather than mixing in ordinary files.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

For network backups, Apple documents another Mac and NAS using Time Machine over SMB. AFP-based network backup is unsupported in macOS 27 or later, including for older Mac network destinations and older AirPort or Time Capsule setups. If your current destination uses AFP, verify its protocol and move to a supported destination before upgrading.

Set up Time Machine on macOS Ventura 13 or later

  1. Connect the backup device, then open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Time Machine.
  2. Select Add Backup Disk, choose the destination, and click Set Up Disk.
  3. If asked to erase the destination, first confirm it contains no files you still need. If you enable encryption, save the password; Apple says you need it to restore files.
  4. Choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu. Check its progress or the date and time of the latest backup, and wait for the backup to finish before upgrading. The first backup may take longer; later backups copy files changed since the previous backup.
  5. Eject the disk before disconnecting it.

Time Machine backs up personal files such as apps, music, photos, email, and documents. Apple’s Mac User Guide says it does not back up system files or apps installed during macOS installation.

When is it safe to start the macOS 27 upgrade?

Start after you have verified the model, checked storage, and confirmed that a separate backup has completed. Use Software Update to install:

  1. Search for Software Update in Spotlight, or open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Review the available update or upgrade and any compatibility or storage message. Have the administrator login password ready.
  3. Let installation complete without putting the Mac to sleep. If it is a laptop, keep its lid open. Restarts, progress bars, and temporary blank screens can occur during installation.

Apple’s macOS 27 upgrade instructions and macOS update guidance describe the Software Update process.
