When Mule runs in a Docker container on the same machine as Ollama, configure Mule’s HTTP request to use http://host.docker.internal:11434 instead of localhost. Add the Ollama API path—for example, /api/chat. This address works only if the container can resolve and route to its Docker host, and Ollama is listening on an address reachable from the container.
Why the host address matters
Ollama’s local API uses port 11434. Its standard API base is http://localhost:11434/api, and its OpenAI-compatible API base is http://localhost:11434/v1. But inside a container, localhost refers to that container, not the computer running it. Docker Desktop provides host.docker.internal as the route to host services, so a Mule container can try http://host.docker.internal:11434/api/chat for Ollama’s chat endpoint. This example combines Docker’s host-address behavior with Ollama’s documented API paths; verify it from the Mule runtime you actually use. Docker Desktop networking and Ollama’s API documentation describe these parts.
Configure the Docker host name
Docker Desktop
Docker Desktop documents host.docker.internal as the host-service address, so try it directly in Mule’s HTTP request URL. The address is relative to the Docker environment running Mule, not a general alias for any computer on your network. See Docker Desktop networking.
Recommended Free Tools
Docker Engine
If the name does not resolve in a Docker Engine container, add a host mapping when starting the container: --add-host host.docker.internal=host-gateway. Docker’s host-gateway value maps the name to the host’s internal address; Docker also documents configurable gateway addresses. Apply the mapping to the container in which Mule runs, then verify name resolution and connectivity there. See Docker’s --add-host documentation.

Set Mule’s HTTP request URL
Use Mule’s HTTP client to send the request to the host alias, port, and Ollama endpoint required by your application:
- Chat:
http://host.docker.internal:11434/api/chat - Generate:
http://host.docker.internal:11434/api/generate
Ollama documents both API paths in its API reference. The URL is only the destination; configure the HTTP method, headers, and request body to match the endpoint and your Mule flow. The reviewed documentation does not establish a Mule-specific Ollama connector configuration, so validate the HTTP request in your target runtime.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Make sure Ollama accepts connections from the container
Ollama binds to 127.0.0.1:11434 by default. That loopback-only bind may prevent a separate container from reaching it even when the host name resolves correctly. Ollama’s FAQ shows setting OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434 on macOS and Linux as an example of changing the bind address; restart Ollama after changing its environment. See Ollama’s FAQ.
Binding to 0.0.0.0 exposes the service on available network interfaces, so do not treat it as a blanket security recommendation. Consider the host’s firewall and network context, and allow only the access needed for your setup.

Check the runtime location before using this address
host.docker.internal refers to the host associated with the Docker environment running the container. It does not automatically point to a developer’s workstation from a remote or managed Mule deployment. MuleSoft lists CloudHub, Runtime Fabric, hybrid standalone, and standalone among its runtime hosting choices; the actual network path depends on where the Mule process runs. Confirm the deployment location and connectivity to the Ollama host before using this local-container example. See MuleSoft’s deployment overview.
Troubleshoot connection failures
- Connection refused: Check that Ollama is running and listening on port
11434. Its default loopback bind may be inaccessible from the container; review theOLLAMA_HOSTsetting and host firewall. - Timeout: Confirm that Mule is running in the expected container and network, that the host address routes to the machine running Ollama, and that firewall rules permit the connection.
- Name-resolution error: On Docker Desktop, try the documented host alias. On Docker Engine, add
--add-host host.docker.internal=host-gatewayif needed. - Test succeeds elsewhere but fails in Mule: Verify connectivity from the same runtime or container environment Mule uses. A test from the host machine alone does not establish that the container can reach Ollama.
Ollama’s API documentation says the API is not strictly versioned, is expected to remain stable and backwards compatible, and may have deprecations announced in release notes. MuleSoft’s deployment overview is for the current latest documentation, so check instructions for the Mule runtime version you deploy. Ollama API documentation and MuleSoft deployment overview provide the relevant scope.
