After deleting something on an iPhone, check the app’s Recently Deleted area first, then the relevant iCloud.com recovery option. If neither has it, look for an iCloud or computer backup made before the deletion. Before restoring a whole-device backup, protect the data currently on the iPhone: Apple requires erasing an already-set-up device before restoring a backup.
Start with the app that held the deleted item
Open the app where the file or information was stored and look for Recently Deleted or a similar recovery area. If the item is there, use that app’s recovery option before attempting a whole-device restore. The recovery behavior and retention period depend on the app; Apple’s guidance does not establish one universal period for every iPhone app.
Check the iCloud recovery route for that data type
iCloud Drive and other app files
For deleted iCloud Drive and other supported app files, Apple says iCloud.com can recover them within 30 days. This is a recovery window for the supported iCloud file route, not a guarantee for every deleted item on an iPhone. Apple Support states: “However, you can’t recover or restore files you permanently remove.” Apple’s iCloud.com file recovery instructions explain the available route.

Contacts, calendars, and bookmarks
These have separate recovery options through iCloud.com that restore earlier versions. Restoring contacts replaces the current contacts across devices. Apple advises making a backup first because recent changes may be lost. Follow Apple’s instructions for recovering contacts, calendars, or bookmarks rather than treating file recovery as a universal undelete feature.

Compare recovery options before changing the iPhone
| Recovery path | Best suited to | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| App-level or iCloud.com recovery | A recently deleted item supported by that app or iCloud data type | Availability depends on the data type and recovery window; permanently removed files cannot be recovered through Apple’s cited iCloud file path. |
| Restore an iCloud device backup | An available device backup made before the deletion | Restoring to an already-set-up iPhone requires erasing it first; backup date and newer device data matter. |
| Restore a computer backup | An available computer backup made before the deletion | You need the computer and a compatible connection. The selected backup’s date matters, and an encrypted backup requires its password. |
| No available copy | Data absent from app recovery, iCloud recovery, and backups | Apple’s cited guidance does not establish a dependable recovery method for this situation. |
Find and protect backups before restoring
Check available iCloud and computer backups, then compare their dates and sizes with the deletion date. A backup can help only if it is available and contains the relevant information from before the deletion. Apple’s backup restoration instructions require erasing an already-set-up iPhone before restoring a whole-device backup, so this is not a risk-free preview of what is inside.
Be cautious about setting up the iPhone as new or creating backups while deciding. Apple warns that after setting up as new, later backups can overwrite an older iCloud backup you might otherwise want to restore. Check the backup situation in your account and device settings before proceeding.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Restore from a computer backup
Apple’s computer-backup restore workflow requires connecting the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable. The cable must be compatible with both devices and capable of data transfer; it enables the connection but does not recover deleted data by itself. If the computer backup is encrypted, you need its password to restore it.

Not everything that later appears on an iPhone is necessarily stored in its device backup. Some information syncs separately through iCloud. Apple notes that Messages and Voice Memos can upload automatically when their iCloud features are enabled; after restoring, keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi so synced information can download. If something is still missing, Apple recommends checking computer backups. See Apple’s guidance on information missing after an iCloud Backup restore.

What if the data is permanently deleted?
If the item is absent from the app’s recovery area, the relevant iCloud recovery option, and every available backup, the official Apple guidance cited here does not establish a dependable way to retrieve it. Apple specifically says permanently removed files cannot be recovered through its iCloud.com file recovery path. That statement applies to that path; it is not a definitive finding about every data type or every possible circumstance.
