Wi-Fi 8 is the emerging name for IEEE 802.11bn, a draft amendment focused on more reliable, consistent connections—not simply higher peak speeds. Its targets address throughput, latency and packet loss under specified comparisons, but they are not guarantees for every home. As of October 2026, the standard remains in draft and ballot work. If your network has a problem you need to solve now, upgrade for that need; if it works well and Wi-Fi 8 is your main reason to replace it, waiting is the more grounded choice.
What Wi-Fi 8 means
Wi-Fi 8 is the emerging consumer name for IEEE P802.11bn, the IEEE 802.11 working group’s Ultra High Reliability (UHR) amendment. IEEE describes the project as adding “an Ultra High Reliability capability to a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN).” It changes both the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers, and its scope covers carrier frequencies from 1 GHz through 7.250 GHz. IEEE P802.11 Task Group BN project scope
The practical emphasis is performance consistency in challenging conditions: congestion, interference, movement, dense networks and transitions between access points. Qualcomm’s explanations of the evolving draft discuss coordination among access points, coexistence among radios inside a device and more energy-aware operation. Those are vendor explanations of draft design priorities, not a final, exhaustive list of Wi-Fi 8 features. Qualcomm’s overview of ultra-high reliability
What IEEE’s performance targets do—and do not—promise
IEEE’s scope sets target modes for comparison with Extremely High Throughput (EHT) MAC/PHY operation, the generation associated with Wi-Fi 7. The targets apply in at least one mode and specified scenario; they do not mean every certified device will deliver these improvements in ordinary use.

| Measure | IEEE 802.11bn scope target | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput | At least 25% higher in at least one mode at one or more signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) levels in a rate-versus-range comparison. | A specified comparison target, not a universal 25% speed increase for users. |
| Latency | At least 25% lower latency at the 95th percentile of the latency distribution in at least one mode. | A target for the slower end of measured latency results in the defined comparison, not a promise that every app or connection will feel 25% faster. |
| Packet loss | At least 25% lower MAC protocol data unit (MPDU) loss in at least one mode for a given scenario, with particular relevance to transitions between basic service sets (BSSs). | A scenario-based target, not a guarantee against dropped packets in every network. |
IEEE’s scope also includes a mechanism to reduce access-point power consumption, including for mobile access points, and to improve peer-to-peer operation compared with EHT operation. The amendment is intended to ensure backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE 802.11 devices in the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz unlicensed bands. Actual results will still depend on client support, product implementation, network configuration, radio conditions, coverage and broadband service. Local regulations continue to govern which bands and operating conditions are permitted.
What the reliability focus could mean at home
A household with stable video calls, adequate coverage and no recurring connection trouble may not notice enough benefit to justify replacing working equipment just to chase a new generation. Wi-Fi 8’s goals are more relevant when the current pain point is inconsistent performance—for example, connections that become unreliable in a crowded building, during movement around a mesh network, or near the edge of coverage.

How Wi-Fi 8 relates to Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be and is the preceding generation. Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 7 features such as 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM and Multi-Link Operation, while presenting Wi-Fi 8 as further PHY and MAC development. That comparison is a vendor explanation, not a final specification for Wi-Fi 8. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 overview

Do not assume Wi-Fi 8 will double top speed or that all devices will gain the same capabilities. The project’s headline targets concern selected modes and defined scenarios; the draft is still changing. Nor does a Wi-Fi 8 access point give older client devices Wi-Fi 8 capabilities simply because they can connect to it.
Draft status and expected timing
As of October 2026, IEEE 802.11bn is still a draft, not a final approved amendment. The IEEE project timeline lists Draft 2.0 dated September 2, 2026, with a 77% ballot result, and shows predicted milestones extending into 2028. Those later dates are estimates, not firm launch dates. IEEE 802.11 project timelines

Should you upgrade now or wait?
| Your situation | Practical choice | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Your current network has a concrete problem or a device is failing. | Upgrade now if solving that problem matters; Wi-Fi 7 is one current-generation category to consider. | Choose for your home layout, internet plan, client devices, wired-port needs and support requirements—not for an unverified Wi-Fi 8 promise. |
| Your network works, and you have no urgent coverage or reliability need. | Wait if Wi-Fi 8 is the main reason you are considering a replacement. | Waiting allows the draft, certification, compatible clients, retail availability, independent testing and pricing to become clearer. |
| You expect a new router to make every existing device faster or more reliable. | Set expectations carefully before buying. | Backward compatibility is intended, but older clients do not acquire new-generation capabilities merely by connecting to a new access point. |
A Wi-Fi 8 network’s benefits will depend on compatible access points and clients, the final certified feature set, implementation and the radio environment. Until retail products and independent results are established, there is no sound basis for comparing specific Wi-Fi 8 models, prices or regional availability.
