You can export an individual Apple Note on a Mac with File > Export as > Markdown. For saving many notes, MacMost describes a manual workflow that creates separate Markdown text files and separate image files; it also says a similar process can be automated with a Shortcut. Treat these as portable exports, not a verified full backup that can restore every Notes feature.
Export one Apple Note as a Markdown file
Apple’s Mac Notes guide documents this export path:

Choose File > Export as > Markdown.

Choose where to save the file and save it.
Apple says Markdown export is intended to let you use notes in writing, content, and other workflows that support Markdown. The command is documented for a selected note, so it is the clear built-in option when you need to export notes one at a time. Apple Support’s Mac Notes guide describes the feature.

Can you export all Apple Notes to Markdown?
The Club MacMost tutorial is exclusive to Club MacMost; its archive lists it as published September 14, 2026. A MacMost newsletter dated September 17, 2026 describes a way to save all Notes in macOS Tahoe and Golden Gate as small Markdown text files. It characterizes the process as manual but quick, with images saved as separate files.
The newsletter does not provide the tutorial’s complete steps or establish the exact batch-selection method. It therefore supports the existence of a bulk-saving approach, but not a precise set of instructions that can be reproduced from the newsletter alone. For an individual note, use Apple’s documented export command; for the described all-notes workflow, consult the Club MacMost tutorial.

Can a Shortcut automate the export?
MacMost says a similar workflow can be made with an automated Shortcut. The newsletter synopsis does not give the Shortcut recipe or establish its scope, reliability, or how it handles every note feature. There is not enough information here to provide exact Shortcut steps or promise that an automation will export every intended note and image.
If you use a Shortcut based on the tutorial, check the resulting folder against the notes you meant to export and confirm that expected image files are present. The source does not provide performance measurements or a verification method, so treat that check as a practical safeguard rather than a guarantee of completeness.

What Markdown export preserves—and what it does not establish
Apple documents Markdown export and import, but the available descriptions do not establish that exported files preserve every Notes attribute, link, attachment, or other feature. MacMost’s description specifically says images are saved separately; it does not describe feature-by-feature fidelity. Keep the Markdown files as portable copies for Markdown-compatible workflows, not as a proven, complete replacement for Notes data.
Apple also documents importing one or more Markdown files into Notes. For macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and later, Apple says Notes converts Markdown syntax to rich text during import. That supports bringing Markdown-formatted content back into Notes, but Apple does not promise that import restores every original note attribute or attachment. Apple’s Markdown import guidance specifies the conversion behavior for those operating-system versions.

Need a single portable note: export the selected note through File > Export as > Markdown.
