To configure multiple monitors in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, identify each screen, arrange the display tiles to match your desk, then choose how Windows should use them. Select each monitor before changing its scale, resolution, or orientation; HDR and refresh-rate controls are optional and depend on the display and connection.
1. Connect the displays and open Display settings
Connect each monitor to your PC or dock and check that the connections are secure. Windows shows its multi-display arrangement controls after it detects more than one screen. Open Settings > System > Display. If Windows does not list a connected display, expand Multiple displays and select Detect. For a wireless display that is connected but missing from the list, select Connect in that section. Microsoft also describes connecting a wireless display adapter through Windows’ Cast controls. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover these connection paths.
2. Identify and arrange the monitors

In Display settings, select Identify. A number appears on each physical screen.

Drag the numbered rectangles in the settings diagram until their positions reflect how the screens sit on your desk—for example, a screen to the left should appear to the left in the diagram.

Select Apply. Microsoft Support’s instruction is: “When you’re happy with the layout, select Apply.”

Move the pointer from screen to screen along the edges where the monitors meet. If it crosses at the wrong place or direction, return to the diagram and adjust the tiles.
The tile positions control how Windows maps pointer movement and window movement across the desktop; they do not physically reposition the displays.

3. Choose whether to extend or duplicate the desktop
Press Windows+P to open the projection menu, then choose the mode that matches your goal:
| Mode | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| PC screen only | Uses the PC’s primary screen only. | You do not want to use the other display. |
| Duplicate | Shows the same image on the selected displays. | You want the screens to mirror one another. |
| Extend | Creates one desktop area across the displays, allowing windows and items to move between screens. | You want separate workspace on multiple screens. |
| Second screen only | Uses the external screen only. | You want the external display active and the PC screen inactive. |
For an external display connected to a laptop, Extend is also relevant if you intend to use HDR; an initially duplicated configuration can prevent HDR use on that external screen.
4. Configure scale, resolution, and orientation per display
Select the screen first
In Settings > System > Display, select the numbered display you want to change. Scale, resolution, and orientation are configured for the selected screen, and available choices vary with its hardware and connection. Do not assume that every monitor should use the same values.

Choose scale and resolution
Under Scale & layout, use the options marked Recommended as starting points for scale and resolution. A resolution below a display’s native resolution can make text less sharp; depending on the screen and setup, the image may also appear small, centered, bordered by black, or stretched. If resolution changes unexpectedly, Microsoft suggests checking for graphics-driver updates through Windows Update. See Microsoft’s screen resolution and layout guidance.
Set orientation when needed
Choose a different orientation only if your setup calls for it, such as a monitor physically turned to portrait. Windows provides a recommended orientation; a portrait setting should correspond to a monitor that is physically rotated.
5. Adjust HDR or refresh rate only when relevant
HDR
Select the HDR-capable display in Display settings to inspect its HDR capabilities and controls. On a laptop, an external HDR display may initially be duplicated; switch to Extend these displays to use HDR on that external screen. SDR content can look different in HDR mode, and its brightness may need adjustment. The result depends on the display’s make and model. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.

Refresh rate
Changing refresh rates is not required for a normal multi-monitor setup. If video playback stalls or repeatedly stops and starts across monitors, differing refresh rates are one possible cause. Microsoft suggests matching the refresh rate across the monitors in that situation; this is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that it will resolve every playback problem. 6. Set window behavior for docking, if needed
If you regularly disconnect and reconnect a laptop or dock, Windows has preferences to remember window locations based on monitor connection and to minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. Windows can restore window locations when the computer is re-docked. These are optional convenience settings; they are not needed to identify or arrange displays.
When settings or displays do not match these steps

A screen is not listed: check its cable or dock connection, then use Multiple displays > Detect. For a wireless display, use Connect if it is connected but absent.

The pointer crosses at the wrong edge: use Identify again, then adjust the numbered tiles to match the screens’ physical layout and select Apply.

Text or image quality looks wrong: confirm the correct display is selected and review its recommended scale and resolution. Lower-than-native resolution can reduce sharpness or change how the image fits.

An HDR option is unavailable on an external laptop display: check whether the desktop is duplicated and try Extend these displays.

Video playback stutters across screens: compare their refresh rates; Microsoft identifies a mismatch as one possible cause and suggests matching them.
Windows menu names and available options can vary with updates, display capabilities, drivers, docks, and connection hardware.
