You can run Chatwoot on infrastructure you control using a Linux VM, Docker, Kubernetes, or a documented cloud-provider route. Chatwoot lists its self-hosted Community Edition software at $0 per agent per month, but that does not make operating an instance cost-free: you supply infrastructure and handle server operations, including updates. Chatwoot’s pages cited here do not establish the “Cloud API paywall” premise, so this guide focuses on what its documentation does confirm.
What self-hosting Chatwoot means
With self-hosting, you operate the server that runs Chatwoot rather than relying on Chatwoot to host the service. Chatwoot says Cloud customers have hosting and updates managed for them; self-hosted operators run their own server and handle updates. That shift in responsibility is central to deciding whether self-hosting fits your team. Chatwoot’s account setup guide explains the distinction.
Chatwoot documents a self-hosted Community Edition at $0 per agent per month. That is the software-plan price, not a quote for a complete deployment. You still need infrastructure and the time and processes to operate it. Check Chatwoot’s current self-hosted pricing and plan details before choosing an edition; its paid support and Enterprise options may change.

Chatwoot’s self-hosted pricing page calls for a Linux server, PostgreSQL, and Redis. For production, it gives at least 4 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores as a starting point. Treat that as vendor baseline guidance, not a guarantee that a particular workload will run well at that size. Actual needs depend on how you use the service, and the cited guidance is not a workload-specific sizing calculator.

- Linux server: a VM or other Linux host is the foundation.
- PostgreSQL and Redis: Chatwoot lists both as required supporting services.
- File uploads: the pricing page says uploads can use S3 or S3-compatible storage.
- Production starting point: at least 4 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores, per Chatwoot.
These are vendor-published requirements and guidance, not independent performance findings. The self-hosted plans page is the source for the listed components and baseline.
Which deployment route should you choose?
Chatwoot documents Linux VM installation, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-provider deployment routes. Its pages do not provide a quantitative comparison of their cost or complexity. Use your team’s operating experience and maintenance capacity to choose.

| Route | May suit teams that | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Linux VM | Want to operate a conventional Linux server | Decide how you will install, update, monitor, and back up the instance. |
| Docker | Already use container-based deployment workflows | Confirm who owns the container deployment and ongoing maintenance. |
| Kubernetes | Already operate Kubernetes and want to deploy within that environment | Account for the team’s capacity to manage the orchestration layer as well as Chatwoot. |
| Cloud-provider route | Prefer deploying on a cloud platform | Check provider charges and decide which infrastructure tasks remain yours. |
These are practical decision criteria, not Chatwoot rankings. The deployment page and installation guide list documented routes. Chatwoot notes that the operator pays for infrastructure; provider costs vary, and the cited pages do not establish a total deployment cost.
How to plan a self-hosted deployment
- Choose the operating model. Decide whether your team can own the server, updates, and backups, or whether managed hosting is a better fit. Self-hosting gives you responsibility for those operations.
- Select a documented route. Start with Chatwoot’s deployment guide or self-hosted installation guide and follow the instructions for your chosen environment.
- Provision the supporting services. Plan for Linux, PostgreSQL, and Redis. If users will upload files, decide whether to use S3 or compatible storage.
- Size the host for your workload. Use Chatwoot’s 4 GB RAM and 2 CPU-core production starting point as a baseline only. Do not infer capacity or performance for your instance from that minimum alone.
- Budget for operations. Include infrastructure charges and staff time for updates and backups when comparing self-hosting with Cloud.
- Verify current instructions and plan terms. Deployment steps and plan details can change, so use Chatwoot’s current documentation and pricing pages when implementing.
Is self-hosting cheaper than Chatwoot Cloud?
There is no workload-specific total-cost comparison in the cited pages. Community Edition is listed at $0 per agent per month, but self-hosting still involves infrastructure charges and operator time. Cloud has different hosting, limits, features, and maintenance responsibilities, so its plan price is not directly comparable to the Community Edition software price.

At the time represented by the cited 2026 pricing results, Chatwoot’s Cloud pricing page listed a Hacker tier at $0 per agent per month, limited to two agents and 500 conversations monthly. Those limits and plan details are volatile; verify them on Chatwoot’s Cloud pricing page. Chatwoot’s account setup guide describes Cloud hosting and updates as managed, unlike self-hosted operations.
For a useful comparison, identify the features and limits you need, estimate your infrastructure costs, and include the ongoing time required to maintain the server and backups. The cited prices alone cannot determine which option will cost less for your team.

Does “the Cloud API paywall” change the case for self-hosting?
The official pages cited here do not verify that Chatwoot introduced an API paywall or establish which API or feature, plan, or effective date such a claim would concern. They describe Cloud and self-hosted plans, but that information is not enough to establish an API-wide restriction. Do not assume self-hosting removes a particular API limitation without checking official documentation for the specific API, affected tier, and policy date.

Who should self-host Chatwoot?
Self-hosting is most appropriate for a team that wants to operate its own deployment and can take responsibility for its server and updates. Before choosing it, make sure you have an owner for the Linux environment, PostgreSQL and Redis, file storage if needed, backups, and ongoing maintenance. If your team does not want to take on those responsibilities, compare Cloud’s current features and limits instead.
