8K Ultra HD is a video resolution of 7,680 × 4,320 pixels, also called 4320p. The image contains 33,177,600 pixels—about 33 million. The “8K” label describes the resolution tier, not a television’s screen size.
What does 8K Ultra HD mean?
8K UHD describes a picture made up of 7,680 pixels across and 4,320 pixels down. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) identifies this format as 4320p. The exact multiplication is 7,680 × 4,320 = 33,177,600 pixels. ITU’s 2023 resolution information gives the dimensions and describes the total as about 33 million.
The “K” is shorthand for the approximate number of horizontal pixels. It does not mean the display measures eight thousand pixels diagonally, nor does it describe the television’s physical dimensions.
How does 8K compare with 4K and 1080p?
8K has four times the total pixels of 4K UHD and sixteen times those of 1080p HD. That is because 8K doubles each dimension compared with 4K, and quadruples each dimension compared with 1080p.

| Format | Resolution | Pixel count | How 8K compares |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8K UHD | 7,680 × 4,320 | 33,177,600 | Baseline |
| 4K UHD | 3,840 × 2,160 | About 8 million, rounded in ITU’s 2012 announcement | 8K has four times as many pixels |
| 1080p HD | 1,920 × 1,080 | About 1–2 million, rounded in ITU’s 2012 announcement | 8K has sixteen times as many pixels |
The exact 8K total comes from multiplying its dimensions. The rounded comparison figures for 4K and HD are from the ITU’s 2012 announcement. In particular, 8K does not have eight times as many pixels as 4K; it has four times as many.
Does an 8K TV label mean more than resolution?
Resolution names the video format, but a consumer television’s 8K designation can involve additional display and signal criteria. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) published an industry definition in July 2019. Its criteria include at least 33 million active, individually addressable pixels in a 16:9 viewable window, with at least 7,680 horizontal and 4,320 vertical pixels, as well as a minimum contrast-modulation measure. CTA’s definition also addresses up-conversion, 8K HDMI input signals, listed frame rates, HDR transfer functions and colorimetry, content protection, and the ability to receive and render 10-bit 8K images.
CTA announced the voluntary definition and logo program on September 17, 2019, for use beginning with 2020 model products. It is an industry definition and program, not a universal legal rule governing every use of “8K.” CTA’s announcement explains the program.

Does 8K automatically look better than 4K?
No. The resolution label establishes the number of pixels in the format; by itself, it does not prove that every viewer will see an improvement or that a complete video setup can display an 8K signal as intended. Overall picture quality also depends on characteristics such as visible resolution, HDR support, color, frame rate, bit depth, and how lower-resolution video is up-converted.
When checking a television or other display, compare its actual specifications with those of the video source and connection. Confirm that the display supports the signal and features you intend to use rather than treating “8K” as a guarantee of every picture-quality capability.
