The GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS is a compact, mountable cinema camera for shooters who want interchangeable manual lenses in a very small body—not a waterproof, point-and-shoot action camera. Its 50MP 1-inch-type sensor and advertised high-frame-rate modes are compelling, but the native Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount does not make the sensor MFT-sized, and there is no autofocus. The $699.99 US launch MSRP was for the body alone; you also need a compatible lens and recording media.

What the Mission 1 Pro ILS is—and who it suits

The ILS takes the small, mountable form of a GoPro-style camera and pairs it with a native MFT lens mount. That combination is unusual: it can put a manually focused lens in places where a larger cinema camera may be awkward, while offering a choice of focal lengths and specialty glass. WIRED describes compact crash-camera and B-camera use as a natural fit; TechRadar found that a close-focusing lens could capture detail and macro-style footage unavailable with the fixed-lens sibling. Those are use-case assessments, not guaranteed results.

It makes the most sense if you deliberately want lens choice, close focus, unusual framing, or a tiny camera placement—and are comfortable setting focus and aperture yourself. If your priority is easy subject tracking, weather resistance, or a camera that is ready to shoot without choosing a lens, the ILS is a difficult substitute for a conventional action camera.

Does the MFT mount mean it has an MFT-sized sensor?

No. GoPro specifies a 1-inch-type sensor, not an MFT-sized sensor. MFT describes the lens mount; it does not describe the sensor dimensions here. GoPro lists a 2.7× crop without stabilization and approximately 3× with stabilization. In GoPro’s example, a 17mm MFT lens gives a field of view roughly equivalent to 50mm on full frame when stabilized. Expect a tighter view than that lens would provide on a conventional MFT camera, and plan focal length around the ILS’s crop rather than the mount label.

How does it compare with the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro?

The main decision is convenience versus lens flexibility. According to TechRadar, the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro offers autofocus, waterproofing, and horizon lock, while the ILS trades those conveniences for an interchangeable mount. The ILS’s close-focus potential and ability to use compatible manual lenses may be more valuable for controlled shots or specialized placements; the fixed-lens version is the more straightforward choice for conventional action-camera use.

What video modes and image features does GoPro advertise?

GoPro’s 2026 launch announcement lists a 50MP 1-inch-type sensor and GP3 processor, shared with the Mission 1 Pro. Advertised capture modes include up to 8K60, 4K240, and 1440p480; Open Gate recording up to 8K30 and 4K120; and short 1080p960 burst slow-motion clips. These are advertised modes, not a promise that every combination has the same crop, thermal behavior, or recording duration.

GoPro also lists 10-bit color, GP-Log2, HLG HDR, timecode sync, and up to 240Mbps stock bitrate. GoPro Labs features, including experimental higher bitrate and custom stabilization, are separate from stock capabilities; treat them as experimental rather than assuming they are standard recording options.

Which lenses work, and what does the manual workflow involve?

The ILS has no electronic contacts for lenses and does not support autofocus. Choose a lens with manual focus and manual or fixed aperture; a lens that depends on electronic focus or aperture control is not a suitable assumption. Confirm a specific lens’s operation before buying it, particularly if using an adapter or specialty glass.

Focus Assist magnifies the rear-screen view up to 8×, while focus peaking marks areas that appear in focus. Those aids help, but a small rear screen can make precise manual focus demanding. A larger monitor or supported iPhone/iPad workflow may help when focus is critical.

HyperSmooth compatibility is lens-dependent. GoPro lists support for prime rectilinear lenses from 6mm to 500mm and separately names fisheye examples including Laowa 4mm, 7Artisans 6mm, Meike 7.5mm, 7Artisans 7.5mm II, and Brightin Star 7.5mm. Treat those as GoPro-listed examples, not a guarantee that every lens in a category will work identically. Check GoPro’s current supported-lens list and the required camera settings before purchase; compatibility can change.

Is the Mission 1 Pro ILS waterproof?

No waterproof rating is listed for the ILS in GoPro’s product specifications. The interchangeable lens mount also makes lens choice and protection part of the setup. Do not choose it on the assumption that a small GoPro body is automatically ready for water or rough weather. If waterproofing and autofocus are central requirements, the fixed-lens Mission 1 Pro is the more natural comparison.

What does the camera cost, and what else belongs in the budget?

GoPro announced a US launch MSRP of $699.99 for the ILS body on August 26, 2026, and $599.99 for existing GoPro subscribers. The lens is sold separately. These are launch-announcement prices, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability; check local price, stock, and lens availability where you live.

Budget for the lens as well as the body. You will also need a microSD card: GoPro specifies V30 or UHS-3 and links buyers to a recommended-card list, which is worth checking for current models and sufficient capacity for large 8K files. Depending on the shoot, additional batteries and a support solution may add to the system cost.

How portable is it once rigged?

GoPro lists the body at 197g and 89.6 × 58.7 × 46.1mm, including the mount and excluding the body cap. Those figures describe the body, not a ready-to-shoot combination: add the lens, card, battery, and any adapter or support when judging overall size and weight.

Digital Camera World advises external support for lenses over 250g. Treat that as review guidance, and consider the weight of any adapter in the assembled setup. The body has mounting fingers, a 1/4-20 thread, and magnetic latch compatibility, giving small rigs several mounting options; the lens and shooting position still determine what support is sensible.

What are the battery and recording-media considerations?

The camera uses a 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery. GoPro claims more than 3 hours of continuous recording at 4K30 and more than 5 hours at 1080p30. Those figures are manufacturer claims for those specific modes, not expected runtimes at 8K or high frame rates. TechRadar notes substantially shorter mode-specific figures for high-resolution recording, so plan for the resolution and frame rate you intend to use rather than carrying over the lower-resolution runtime claim.

Is the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS worth it?

The ILS is a specialized camera with a clear trade: lens flexibility and a tiny mountable body in exchange for manual focusing, tighter-than-expected framing for an MFT lens, and the need to build a compatible lens-and-support setup. Its high-frame-rate and Open Gate modes may appeal to cinema-oriented shooters, but a headline mode alone does not make it an easy action camera.

For a deliberate manual-lens workflow, compact crash-cam placement, or access to suitable specialty glass, the ILS has a distinctive role. For spontaneous action, autofocus tracking, waterproofing, or horizon lock, its fixed-lens sibling is the more practical direction. Compare the complete system—not just the body price—including lens compatibility, recording media, and any support your chosen lens needs.
