Wi‑Fi 7 routers can support standout features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channels, but a router alone cannot make them available to every device. Your client hardware must support the relevant feature, and 320 MHz operation also depends on 6 GHz spectrum being available for Wi‑Fi where you live. There is no reliable figure establishing that “almost nobody” can use these features, so treat the phrase as a compatibility warning—not a measured statistic.

What makes Wi‑Fi 7 different?

Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED 7 highlights three capabilities: 320 MHz channels, Multi-Link Operation (MLO), and 4K QAM. They can increase capacity or performance under supported conditions, but they do not guarantee a particular speed or improvement for every connection. The Wi‑Fi Alliance’s 2024 announcement says 4K QAM can achieve transmission rates 20% higher than 1024 QAM; that is a capability comparison, not a promise of 20% faster internet downloads.

Multi-Link Operation

MLO lets compatible devices use multiple Wi‑Fi links. The Wi‑Fi Alliance describes it as a way to increase throughput, reduce latency, and improve reliability. The exact benefit depends on the router and client supporting the same MLO implementation and on conditions such as interference and distance.

320 MHz channels

A 320 MHz channel is wider than the channels used by earlier Wi‑Fi generations and can carry more data in suitable conditions. It operates in the 6 GHz band, so its availability depends on whether the country permits Wi‑Fi use of 6 GHz spectrum. Even where available, channel width is a network-design choice: in a high-density deployment, narrower channels may make better use of limited spectrum.

4K QAM

Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) describes how much data can be encoded in a radio signal. Wi‑Fi 7’s 4K QAM can transmit more data per signal than 1024 QAM, but its higher rates require compatible equipment and favorable signal conditions. It does not override limits imposed by distance, walls, interference, or the internet connection.

Why your router may not unlock these features

Wi‑Fi features require support at both ends of a connection. A router cannot add a 6 GHz radio or Wi‑Fi 7 capability to a phone, laptop, or other client that lacks it. TP-Link’s US support guidance says 6 GHz Wi‑Fi requires a Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 device; older clients can still connect over 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, but cannot use 6 GHz. It advises checking the device maker’s specifications for exact support. TP-Link’s guidance also notes that MLO is available on Wi‑Fi 7 Deco products and that some models or features may depend on compatible firmware.

What Wi‑Fi 7 speeds have trials reported?

A Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) announcement dated February 10, 2025 describes CableLabs and Intel testing Wi‑Fi 7 and Wi‑Fi 6E in a 4,500-square-foot, two-story home. The access point was in a first-floor corner office, and clients were tested at fixed locations. In that setup, the trial reported up to 3.7 Gbps downlink at close range using a 320 MHz channel, and more than 2 Gbps at typical residential distances on the same floor. These are trial results, not a household speed guarantee; the announcement does not make them a universal expectation for every router, client, or floor plan. The results help show why conditions matter: the equipment, channel width, client position, and home layout all affect what a Wi‑Fi connection can achieve. A broadband plan and the router’s wired connections can also limit internet throughput, even when the wireless link is capable of more.

What MLO testing says about reliability

In a WBA announcement dated February 26, 2026, the alliance described a second phase of testing MLO with commercial hardware in a 4,500-square-foot home. The test was designed to include wall attenuation, active interference, and traffic from multiple devices; the tested MLO used 5 GHz and 6 GHz simultaneously. The WBA presented the trial as exploring resilience and latency improvements. Its description of “wired-like reliability” is an industry characterization of trial potential, not a consumer performance guarantee or an independent standard. See the WBA Phase 2 announcement.

Why 320 MHz is not always the right setting

Wider channels can offer higher peak throughput, but they are not automatically best for every network. The WBA’s April 30, 2025 enterprise-trial announcement focused on 160 MHz channels in 6 GHz and said 320 MHz channels would be more common in smaller networks. That context illustrates the trade-off: deployments with many nearby networks may choose narrower channels to manage spectrum use, while a smaller network may be able to use wider channels. • Full 2.5G WAN & LAN Ports for Future-Proof Networking: Archer BE550 is equipped with one 2.5G WAN port and four 2.5G LAN ports, enabling peak device performance and offering an ideal solution for future-proofing your home network.
  • Enhanced Experience with Premium Components: Our proprietary Wi-Fi optimization technology, combined with six strategically positioned antennas and Beamforming, ensures higher capacity, stronger and more reliable connections, and reduced interference.
  • Your clients: Identify which phones, computers, and other devices support Wi‑Fi 7, 6 GHz, and MLO. Older devices may still connect, but they will use the bands and features they support.
  • Your local spectrum rules: Confirm whether 6 GHz Wi‑Fi is available in your country. The Wi‑Fi Alliance notes that 320 MHz channels are available in countries that make 6 GHz available for Wi‑Fi.
  • Specific feature support: Verify the router and client support the same MLO mode or channel width, and check whether firmware is required.
  • Your space and network conditions: Walls, distance, interference, and the number of nearby networks influence the useful range and performance of a channel.
  • Your wired connection: Match the router’s wired port capabilities to your broadband plan and any wired devices. A fast wireless link cannot raise a slower internet or Ethernet bottleneck.

Wi‑Fi 7 can be a meaningful upgrade when compatible clients and network conditions let you use its capabilities. If most of your devices lack Wi‑Fi 7 or 6 GHz support, the router may still serve them over older bands, but its headline features will not automatically improve those clients.
