To install a Windows update from an .msu file, double-click the file or run Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) with its full path. For command-line servicing, use DISM in an elevated terminal. First make sure the package matches your Windows version and processor architecture; the wrong package or missing prerequisites can make an update inapplicable.
Choose the correct update package
-
Find the update’s KB number and open its Microsoft Update Catalog listing or Microsoft support article. Confirm it applies to the Windows product and version installed on the PC. Microsoft describes searching the Catalog by update number and selecting the entry for the operating system in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
-
Check the package’s processor architecture and any prerequisite notes in the update’s instructions. Windows version or architecture mismatch, an update that is already installed, supersedence, and missing prerequisites can all cause an “update is not applicable” message.

Download the matching
.msufile from the Catalog. Package availability and prerequisites vary by update, so use the current instructions for the target KB rather than assuming a package applies to every Windows system.#1 Best Overall

Install the .MSU file with WUSA
For an interactive installation, double-click the downloaded .msu file and follow the Windows Update Standalone Installer prompts. You can also open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run WUSA with the file’s full path:
wusa.exe "C:PathToUpdate.msu"
Replace the example path with the location and name of the file you downloaded. Microsoft documents both methods in its Windows Update Standalone Installer documentation. The ordinary WUSA workflow installs the package directly; you do not need to extract the file manually.
Run WUSA quietly or control its restart
WUSA supports a quiet mode for installations without user interaction. A quiet install can restart the PC when required. To suppress that automatic restart, use /norestart with /quiet; restart manually afterward if the update requires it:

Use these switches only when you are prepared to handle any required restart yourself.
Install the .MSU file with DISM
To service the currently running Windows installation from the command line, open Command Prompt or PowerShell as an administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:PathToUpdate.msu"
Change the path to the actual file. Microsoft documents .msu package servicing with DISM in its DISM package servicing command-line options.

/Online targets the Windows installation currently running on the PC. DISM also supports /Image:<path> for servicing an offline Windows image; that is a separate workflow for a mounted image, not the command to use for updating the active installation.

Some cumulative updates for Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 have checkpoint-package requirements. A target update may depend on one or more earlier checkpoint packages, and the required files and order vary. Follow the target KB’s current instructions instead of installing only the final package by default.
For example, Microsoft’s instructions for September 2026 update KB5124010 describe using DISM with the relevant checkpoint packages. Treat this as an example of update-specific guidance, not a universal procedure.

Troubleshoot “update is not applicable”
Do not bypass the applicability check as a general fix. Verify these points before trying another package:
-
The KB number and Windows product and release match the target update.

You have installed any prerequisites required by that KB, including checkpoint packages when its instructions call for them.
Microsoft lists these causes in its update applicability troubleshooting guidance. Check the update’s current Microsoft support article for its package-specific requirements before retrying.
Quick Recap
Which installation method should you use?

DISM with /Online |
Servicing the running Windows installation from a command line or following KB instructions that specify DISM | Adds the package to the active Windows installation. |
DISM with /Image |
Servicing a mounted offline Windows image | Applies the package to the image path rather than the currently running installation. |
