There is no universal wiring diagram for a Honeywell Home smart thermostat. First identify the exact model and whether your HVAC system is conventional or a heat pump, then follow that model’s installation guide. Turn off HVAC power before handling wires, and stop if your equipment or terminal labels do not match the guide.
Identify the thermostat and HVAC system first
Find the thermostat’s model number and identify the type of heating and cooling equipment it controls. The T9 and RTH9580 have separate installation guides, and their wiring requirements are not interchangeable. The RTH9580 guide shows conventional and heat-pump applications separately and cautions that an actual application may differ from its examples.
Use the wiring diagram for your exact model and system. Do not assume that a diagram for another Honeywell Home thermostat applies.

Make the wiring safe to handle
Resideo’s T9 guide states: “Disconnect power before beginning installation.” Switch off power to the HVAC equipment before removing the old thermostat or working with its wiring; the guide warns of shock or equipment-damage risk.

Before disconnecting anything, record which wire is connected to each terminal on the old thermostat. Use terminal labels and the exact new thermostat guide to interpret the connections. Wire color alone is not a reliable way to identify a wire: the T9 guide specifically says there is no universal color for the C-wire.
Check the C-wire requirement for your model
Honeywell Home T9
The T9 guide requires a C-wire for 24 VAC power. If there is no C-wire at the thermostat, it describes an included C-wire adapter route. Follow that guide’s instructions for the compatible adapter installation; do not substitute a generic adapter or infer the C-wire from its color. The T9 guide defines the C-wire as coming from the heating/cooling system and connecting to the thermostat’s C terminal.

Honeywell Home RTH9580
The RTH9580 guide also requires a C-wire, but its requirements and wiring diagrams are specific to that model. It distinguishes conventional systems from heat pumps. Do not apply the T9 adapter instructions to the RTH9580 unless that model’s guide explicitly directs you to do so.
Check T9 compatibility before connecting wires
Resideo says the T9 works with most heating and cooling systems and heat pumps, but its guide identifies these exclusions:

If you have one of these systems, do not proceed with the T9 installation based on a general wiring diagram. Confirm compatibility for your exact equipment and thermostat before connecting anything.

Stop if the terminal labels, equipment, or wiring arrangement do not match the exact model guide, or if you cannot confidently identify the system type or connections. The RTH9580 guide warns that wiring can differ by application. Resideo’s T9 product page directs users to find an authorized professional. Have a qualified HVAC professional verify compatibility and wiring rather than guessing.
