To use After Effects as a beginner, create a composition, add a layer, animate one of its properties with keyframes, preview the result, then render it for your intended destination. This tutorial walks through a simple animated title without requiring footage, and explains what the main panels do and which export route to choose.
Understand the basic After Effects layout
An After Effects project is built from compositions and layers. A composition defines the frame and contains the layers that make up the image or movie. You arrange layers spatially in the Composition panel and over time in the Timeline panel.
- Project panel: Holds imported footage and other project items. You can skip importing media for this exercise because the title is generated inside After Effects.
- Composition panel: Displays the composition frame and lets you place layers within it.
- Timeline panel: Arranges layers over time and exposes their properties, such as Position.
Adobe describes a workflow that cycles through changing properties, animating, and previewing; you can repeat or skip steps depending on the project. See Adobe’s After Effects workflows.
Create a simple animated title
Follow these steps to move a text layer from one position to another. The example composition is five seconds long, but choose dimensions, frame rate, and duration to suit your intended output.

- Create a composition: Choose Composition > New Composition. Select a preset or enter settings appropriate for where the animation will be used. Set the duration; five seconds is enough for this starter exercise.
- Add text: Choose Layer > New > Text, type a short title, then leave text-editing mode.
- Set the starting position: In the Timeline panel, reveal the text layer’s Transform group. Click the stopwatch beside Position to create the first keyframe, then place the text at its starting location in the Composition panel.
- Set the ending position: Move the current-time indicator to the end of the composition and move the text to a different location in the Composition panel. After Effects creates another Position keyframe.
- Preview the animation: Use the Preview panel or press the Spacebar to play and stop. The software interpolates motion between the two keyframed values. If playback is slow, adjust preview quality, frame rate, or duration in the Preview panel.
- Optionally try an effect: Once the movement is clear, select the text layer and apply Effect > Stylize > Glow, or locate Glow in the Effects & Presets panel. This is an experiment, not a required part of the animation.
Keyframes record a property’s value at a particular time. Two Position keyframes therefore define a start and finish, while After Effects calculates the intervening motion. The same general idea applies when you animate other properties.
Choose how to render and export
Rendering creates frames from the composition. Export settings determine how those frames are encoded and packaged in an output file. Choose the route by the handoff you need rather than assuming one format or codec suits every destination.

To render this exercise through After Effects, choose Composition > Add to Render Queue or File > Export > Add to Render Queue. In the Render Queue, select the Output To entry to set a filename and location, review the output settings, and click Render. Adobe identifies the Render Queue as its primary way to render and export movies. For the distinction between rendering and export options, consult Adobe’s rendering and exporting guide.

Check version-specific requirements before setup
Adobe’s system requirements page, last updated June 17, 2026, applies to After Effects 26.2.1 and 26.2 (April 2026), and 26.0 (January 2026). It lists a Windows minimum of 16 GB RAM and recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. It also lists 8 GB of available disk space for installation, a minimum display resolution of 1440×900, and an internal SSD for the application and cache, with additional high-speed drives for media. Internet access, an Adobe ID, and license acceptance are required for activation and use.
These are requirements listed for those versions, not a guarantee of smooth performance or a universal specification for future releases. Check Adobe’s current After Effects system requirements for the version you plan to install. Adobe does not require media drives to be external or prescribe a particular capacity.

Adobe’s FAQ says After Effects is part of Creative Cloud and directs readers to its purchasing-options page. It also links to After Effects tutorials and support, plus web and PDF versions of the manual. Check Adobe’s pages for current regional plan, pricing, trial, and availability details.
