AI-era scraping concerns are contributing to at least one decision to withdraw RSS: Reddit says it will end RSS support on November 13, 2026, because feeds have become a surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. That is evidence of pressure on RSS at Reddit, not proof that AI is killing RSS feeds across the web. A separate report says Microsoft removed Knowledge Base feeds, but the reason remains unknown.

What Reddit announced—and why

In a September 30, 2026 moderator announcement, Reddit said it will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026. The company described RSS as a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.” This is Reddit’s stated rationale; the announcement does not quantify how much scraping uses RSS or say how much of it involves AI.

Reddit also said it will preserve moderation workflows that depend on RSS through supported alternatives. That commitment is limited to those workflows: the announcement does not describe a general replacement for readers who follow public communities in a feed reader.

What is known about Microsoft’s Knowledge Base feeds

In an October 1, 2026 AskWoody post, Susan Bradley reported that Microsoft had removed RSS feeds used to monitor new and changed Knowledge Base postings. Bradley wrote, “I’m not sure whether this is due to the concern of AI scraping content.” That is her uncertainty, not an explanation confirmed by Microsoft. The removal is reported by AskWoody; its cause is not established.

How the two cases differ

Case What happened Scraping rationale Timing or replacement
Reddit Reddit announced it will stop supporting RSS. Reddit explicitly cited large-scale scraping and automated abuse. RSS support ends November 13, 2026. Reddit says alternatives will preserve moderation workflows that depend on RSS.
Microsoft Knowledge Base feeds AskWoody reported that feeds for new and changed Knowledge Base postings had been removed. The AskWoody author said the reason was uncertain. The report gives no effective date or replacement.

These are different kinds of evidence: a platform’s announced future change with a stated reason, and a report of a feed removal whose reason is unknown. They do not establish a broad industry trend or a confirmed AI-driven cause for Microsoft’s change.

What happens to readers when a feed disappears

RSS lets a reader subscribe to updates from websites in a feed reader instead of checking each site manually. Microsoft describes how websites can send article or summary updates into Outlook’s RSS folder. If a publisher or platform removes a feed, automatic updates from that feed may stop even while the site’s pages remain accessible.

Can a feed reader work around missing RSS?

An AskWoody commenter said they use Feedly and that it can create feeds for sites without an RSS link. This is a reader’s account, not confirmation of Feedly’s current feature scope or a guarantee that feed generation works on every site. It also would not restore Reddit’s feeds after Reddit stops supporting them.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Reddit has announced a specific RSS shutdown date and explicitly connected its decision to scraping and automated abuse.
  • Reddit’s stated alternatives are for moderation workflows, not a documented substitute for ordinary readers following communities.
  • AskWoody reported removal of Microsoft Knowledge Base feeds, but did not establish an AI-scraping motive.
  • The cited material provides no statistics on RSS readership, the share of scraping conducted through RSS, or the effect of feed removal on scraping.
