You do not need a dedicated CMS field for FAQ schema. You can generate FAQPage JSON-LD from the same question-and-answer blocks your page already displays, provided the markup accurately reflects the visible FAQ and stays synchronized when that content changes. This can reduce duplicate editing; it does not promise a Google rich result.

Can you generate FAQ schema from page content?

Yes. Google supports JSON-LD and says structured data can be added dynamically with JavaScript; its documentation also describes CMS widgets and JavaScript as ways to generate markup. A separate CMS field is an implementation choice, not a Google requirement. See Google’s guidance on generating structured data with JavaScript and its introduction to structured data.

The key requirement is fidelity: the JSON-LD must represent information readers can see on the page. If an editor changes or removes an answer, the generated markup must change with it. Google says not to mark up content that is not visible and requires structured data to be a true representation of the page. Read its General Structured Data Guidelines.

How to add FAQPage JSON-LD dynamically

  1. Use explicit FAQ blocks. Store each question and answer in a stable, structured content block that also renders the visible FAQ. Avoid trying to infer questions from arbitrary headings or paragraphs.
  2. Generate the JSON-LD from those same blocks. Serialize only complete question-and-answer pairs that appear to users. Prefer server-rendered JSON-LD when convenient; client-side generation is also an option if the script is present in the rendered DOM.
  3. Serialize safely. Use a JSON serializer rather than assembling JSON with string concatenation. Normalize whitespace if needed, but do not rewrite the wording or alter the answer’s meaning.
  4. Keep output synchronized. Generate the visible FAQ and its structured data from the same source, or otherwise ensure edits to the visible content update the JSON-LD in the same release or render.
  5. Validate the rendered page. Compare the generated questions and answers with the visible FAQ, test the structured data, and inspect the deployed URL with Google’s URL Inspection tool to see how Google renders it. Google’s JavaScript structured-data guidance recommends testing structured data and checking Google’s view of the page.

Include QA cases for an empty FAQ, punctuation, quotation marks, HTML entities, and an edited or deleted answer. These are engineering checks, not a separate Google-mandated checklist.

Generate from rich text or keep a separate CMS field?

Google does not prescribe a CMS data model. Choose based on whether your content structure and publishing workflow can reliably keep the rendered FAQ and JSON-LD aligned.

Consideration Generate from FAQ blocks Separate CMS field
Consistency Can reduce drift when display content and schema come from the same blocks. Can drift if editors update one representation but not the other.
Editorial workflow Editors maintain one FAQ representation. Editors may need to maintain visible copy and structured data separately.
Content structure Works best when questions and answers use explicit, stable blocks. Can suit content that does not have a reliably parseable FAQ structure.
Rendering and QA Requires reliable generation in server output or the rendered DOM, plus validation. Requires valid JSON-LD output and checks that it matches the visible FAQ.
Operational ownership Engineering owns extraction and serialization logic; the team must validate changes to it. The team must maintain the field and the process that keeps it aligned with page content.

Generating markup from rich text is a good fit when FAQ blocks have a clear schema and your team can test the renderer. A separate field may be more practical when content is irregular or extraction would be fragile. In either setup, the reader-facing FAQ remains the source of truth for what the markup claims.

Does FAQ schema still show in Google results?

Do not implement FAQPage JSON-LD on the assumption that it will produce a Google FAQ rich result. In an August 2023 announcement, Google said FAQ rich results would only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and that the feature would no longer be shown regularly for other sites. See Google’s August 2023 announcement.

Correct implementation still does not guarantee a search feature. Google’s guideline says: “Google does not guarantee that your structured data will show up in search results, even if your page is marked up correctly according to the Rich Results Test.” Structured data can describe page content to machines, but do not treat FAQ markup as a promise of ranking gains, traffic, or a visible enhancement.

Use FAQPage, not QAPage, for a site-authored FAQ

FAQPage and QAPage describe different page types. A site-authored FAQ with multiple questions and answers is not a QAPage. Google describes QAPage as a page focused on one question where users can submit answers, and explicitly excludes site-authored FAQ pages and pages with multiple questions. Consult Google’s QAPage documentation.

Keep automated markup accurate and useful

Automation can prevent repetitive entry, but it cannot make low-quality or misleading content acceptable. Google advises that automatically generated content should be accurate, high quality, and relevant to users. It also warns that producing pages at scale primarily to manipulate search rankings, without adding user value, may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. See Google’s guidance on generative AI content.
