Amazon Fire tablets do not have a documented universal “refresh license” button. For apps that use Amazon DRM, the Amazon Appstore client periodically contacts Amazon’s servers to refresh an authorization token automatically. If an app reports a license or authorization problem, check the connection and Appstore sign-in first, then update the app and tablet; an app-specific error may need help from its publisher.

What a license refresh means on a Fire tablet

Amazon’s developer documentation explains that app makers can choose to use Amazon DRM (digital rights management) to check whether an app is authorized. For apps that use this system, the Amazon Appstore client must be installed and signed in. It periodically contacts Amazon’s servers to refresh the token that allows access to the app. Amazon’s DRM overview, last updated August 8, 2025, describes that automatic process.

That explanation is for developers; it does not establish a customer-facing command to refresh a license manually. The documentation reviewed does not give a universal Fire tablet Settings or Appstore path for one. Amazon DRM is also optional: developers choose whether and how to implement it, and some apps use other DRM methods. A license message can therefore be specific to one app rather than a tablet-wide fault.

What to check when an app reports a license error

Work through these low-risk checks before considering any disruptive device action. They are troubleshooting steps based on Amazon’s documented requirements and update guidance, not a verified manual license-refresh procedure.

#1 Best Overall

  • Do what you love, uninterrupted — 25% faster performance than the previous generation and is ideal for seamless streaming, reading, and gaming.
  • High-def entertainment — A 10.1" 1080p Full HD display brings brilliant color to all your shows and games. Binge watch longer with 13-hour battery, 3 or 4 GB RAM, 32 or 64 GB of storage, and up to 1 TB expandable storage with micro-SD card (sold separately).
  • Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
  • Stay up to speed — Use the 5 MP front-facing camera to Zoom with family and friends, or create content for social apps like Instagram and TikTok.
  • Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
  1. Check the internet connection. Connect the Fire tablet to Wi-Fi and confirm that other online content loads.
  2. Check the Amazon Appstore. Open it and confirm that it is installed and signed in to the Amazon account associated with the app. Amazon identifies an installed, signed-in Appstore client as a requirement for apps using Amazon DRM.
  3. Check for app and Fire OS updates. Install available updates for the affected app and the tablet. Amazon says Fire devices receive software updates automatically when connected to the internet and recommends current software to use features and avoid registration issues. See Amazon’s Fire tablet software update guidance.
  4. Reopen the app or restart the tablet. This is a low-risk general troubleshooting step, not an Amazon-documented license-refresh command.
  5. If the problem is limited to one app, contact its publisher or Amazon support. The app’s developer decides whether and how to use Amazon DRM, so the publisher may have instructions for that app’s entitlement or authorization error.

Why a factory reset is not a license-refresh shortcut

Do not reset the tablet just to try to renew an app license. Amazon says a Fire tablet factory reset removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and deregisters the device from the Amazon account. A reset is a destructive step for broader device problems, not a documented license-refresh method. If one is necessary, back up content you want to keep and be ready to register the tablet again. See Amazon’s factory-reset guidance and its information about deregistering a device.

When the error remains

If connectivity, Appstore sign-in, and updates do not resolve the message, use the affected app’s support instructions or contact its publisher. The available Amazon documentation establishes automatic token refresh for apps using Amazon DRM, but not a universal manual refresh control or a single fix for every app’s licensing system.
